What do a Greek island and Australia have in common? More than you might think.

From Kythera’s terraced hills and abandoned agricultural landscapes to Australia’s experience of drought, fire, and water management, DIORAMAS explores how two distant places are linked through environment, migration, and memory.

At the heart of this research is Kythera and one landscape in particular: Vythoulas, a place shaped by over 4,000 years of human life. Here, archaeology, climate, and diaspora histories come together to ask urgent questions about how we live with fragile landscapes, past and present.

This is not just history. It’s a conversation about the future.

A wonderful evening at the AAIA with Professor Peter Morgan FAHA, whose fascinating lecture explored the life, work, and intellectual legacy of the Greek poet and thinker Demetrios Kapetanakis. Drawing on themes of modernism, identity, sexuality, and cultural exchange, the presentation illuminated the remarkable significance of Kapetanakis within the broader social, political, and intellectual climate of interwar Europe. A thought-provoking and unusual topic, it sparked lively discussion and offered fresh perspectives on a remarkable yet often overlooked figure. Thank you to Professor Morgan for an outstanding presentation and to everyone who joined us.

Congratulations to AAIA Research Fellow Konstantinos P. Trimmis and his co-authors on their new publication in Geology Today. The study explores the use of low-cost smartphone LiDAR technology for 3D cave mapping, demonstrating how readily available mobile devices can produce reliable digital models of complex underground environments. Using Agios Georgios Cave in Kilkis, Greece, the team highlights the exciting potential of accessible digital technologies for geoscience, heritage documentation, archaeology, and public engagement.
