The University of Fort Hare (UFH) has officially opened its Speech Therapy Clinic in KuGompo (East London) on 29 May 2026. The fully equipped teaching and service facility is designed to expand access to communication rehabilitation services for underprivileged communities at no cost, while strengthening the clinical training of future healthcare professionals.

Located at the New Teaching Venue on Oxford Street, the clinic represents a significant development in the Faculty of Health Sciencesโ€™ Speech Language Pathology (SLP) programme offered by the Department of Natural Rehabilitative Sciences.

The facility is designed to respond to growing community healthcare needs, particularly in areas where access to specialised speech therapy services remains limited.

The launch brought together healthcare professionals, government stakeholders, students, and community members, indicating a shared commitment to strengthening rehabilitation services in the Eastern Cape.

WATCH I Iphupha Alifi Umnikazi Walo Esaphila โ€” From Security Officer to a Graduate

From protecting the university by day to pursuing her dreams by night this is the inspiring story of Landiswa Mbilini, a proud University of Fort Hare student currently completing her BA Honours in African Languages A full-time Security Officer, devoted mother of two, and determined scholar, Landiswaโ€™s journey is one of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering faith.

After years of putting her dreams on hold due to lifeโ€™s responsibilities, joining UFH in 2020 reignited her passion for education and reminded her that it was never too late to begin again. Balancing motherhood, demanding work shifts, teaching practice, and late-night study sessions, Landiswa refused to give up on herself. Through exhaustion, disappointment, and countless challenges, she carried one belief close to her heart: โ€œIphupha alifi umnikazi walo esaphilaโ€ a dream does not die while its owner is still alive.

The University of Fort Hareโ€™s Faculty of Education recently convened a seminar that brought together academics, students, and representatives of the Department of Basic Education to critically examine the promises and challenges of mother tongue-based bilingual education in South African mathematics classrooms.

Hosted by the Science, Mathematics Education, and Environmental Education Department, the seminar ran under the theme โ€œPros and Cons in the Implementation of Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual Education in South African Mathematics Classrooms.โ€

Central to the debate was whether mother tongue-based instruction strengthens conceptual understanding or risks excluding learners who navigate multiple linguistic systems.

The panel, moderated by Dr Xolani Khalo, senior lecturer and Head of Department, included keynote speaker Dr Naledi Mbude-Mehana, Deputy Director-General (DDG) for Transformation Programmes and Language at DBE; Dr Brian Ramadiro, a specialist in the field from the Nelson Mandela Institute; UFH lecturers Dr Nondwe Ngibe and Ms Karin Hackmack; and pre-service teacher Mnikelo Futshane, bringing together policy, institutional, and student perspectives.

WATCH I Against all odds, she made it! Meet Nthabiseng Xelani, a BA Music student at the University of Fort Hare who refused to let epilepsy silence her dreams. As a vocal student, music was Nthabisengโ€™s identity, but living with epilepsy meant carrying a hidden fear. From the anxiety of stigma and judgment to the physical toll of seizures, her academic and musical journey became a quiet yet difficult battle.

With the unwavering support of her parents and her dedicated voice lecturer, Nthabiseng rebuilt her confidence, reclaimed her voice, and successfully completed her degree. Her graduation is a powerful reminder that disability does not mean inability, and that no condition should ever define your future.

From the Cape Flats to a cross-border legal role in East Africa, University of Fort Hare (UFH) Bachelor of Laws (LLB) graduate Bathandwa Hlanjwa is now working at the intersection of law, justice, and community impact in Uganda.

He is currently deployed between Kampala and Bushenyi under a 14-month exchange programme coordinated by the Africa Judges and Jurists Forum (AJJF) and Norec, Norwayโ€™s governmental agency for global work exchanges. He serves as a Legal Advisor with the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI).

The AJJF-Norec programme places young legal professionals within partner organisations across East and Southern Africa, with a focus on strengthening access to justice, legal capacity development, and human rights practice across the region.

His work focuses on criminal justice processes, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), and legal support for vulnerable and incarcerated persons.

Hlanjwa, who graduated with his LLB during the 2026 Autumn Graduation, traces his journey back to the Cape Flats in Zone 8, Kwa Langa, where it all began.

โ€œWhen 15 million daily commuters depend on a system that is both lifeline and battleground, what path forward exists? And what happens when millions of those commuters are children, whose only route to school runs along degraded gravel roads in ageing, unroadworthy vehicles?โ€

That was the urgent question Dr Siyabulela Christopher Fobosi took to the University of Manchester recently, where he presented at the International Network for Transport and Accessibility in Low Income Communities (INTALInC) and the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) conference, Addressing Transport Inequalities in the Global South.

Dr Fobosi is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Public and Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law. An industrial and public sociologist, his research focuses on the political economy of labour, mobility justice, and transport inequality. He is the author of A Fork in the Road? The Formalisation of South Africaโ€™s Minibus Taxi Industry (African Sun Media, 2026).

Over two workshops, he offered a searing portrait of South Africaโ€™s minibus taxi industry, not only as a site of labour precarity and violence, but as a daily obstacle course for the nationโ€™s young learners.

WATCH I Before she was a University of Fort Hare graduate, Vuyolwethu Dila was locked in the toughest fight of her life. At just 25 years old, the Mthatha-born boxing champion has gone from representing South Africa on the global stage to the dark depths of a crippling crystal m**h (tik) addiction, and finally to the ultimate victory, walking the stage with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology.

A doctoral study by University of Fort Hare researcher Dr Thulani Ningi has found that everyday households in the Amathole District are constantly forced to make difficult choices between food, water, and energy needs โ€“ and that these trade-offs directly shape how resilient families are to economic and environmental shocks.

This study earned the young, award-winning academic from Qoboqobo (Keiskammahoek) his PhD in Agricultural Economics at UFH during the 2026 Autumn Graduation.

Based on 655 households and supported by focus group discussions, his research shows that there are more trade-offs than synergies in how families access and use these essential resources. In simple terms, people often sacrifice one need to meet another.
