University of the Western Cape's DVC for Academic, Prof Vivienne Lawack hosted a delegation from ABB and the Swiss Embassy in South Africa. Their visit aimed to explore avenues for collaboration and partnership with the institution.

During their tour of the UWC campus, the delegation got to see and took a picture with "The Beginning and the End," a striking bronze sculpture by David Hlongwane. This masterpiece tells the story of a domestic worker joyously celebrating her son's graduation, resonating deeply with UWC's mission.

UWC takes pride in its commitment to serving historically marginalised groups in South Africa, who were denied access to higher education during the apartheid era, often limited to domestic work. This sculpture exemplifies the institution's ongoing dedication to inclusivity empowerment and social justice .

There are 3 open calls for the SASUF Research & Innovation Week 13-17 May 2024. We will present them one by one, beginning with the call for Hosting Satellite Events!

πŸ“ Hosted 13-14 May in Sweden
⏰ Last day to submit your proposal is November 17

Satellite Events can be workshops, seminars, guest lectures, site visits, industry collaboration, and so much more. The events can be organised by individual researchers or jointly in collaboration with nearby universities or organisations linked to research, education or innovation.

By hosting a Satellite Event, you get the possibility to involve a great number of researchers, important stakeholders but also the public, to a joint discussion within a field close to your heart.

The satellite events have a specific purpose in the focus on bridging global and local challenges. For the organizers, it is a chance to disseminate their work and engage with fellow students, teachers, researchers, and stakeholders from the region. For international guests (or guest from another region of the same country), the satellite events provide an opportunity to gain first-hand experience and gain a deeper understanding of the suitability issues but also the local conditions at a university or in a specific region.

There are 3 open calls for the SASUF Research & Innovation Week 13-17 May 2024. We will present them one by one, continuing with the call for Arranging a Workshop during the Sustainability Forum!

πŸ“ Hosted 15-17 May in Sweden
⏰ Last day to submit your proposal is November 17

The Sustainability Forum will be organised around parallel workshops, seminars, and sessions taking place between 15-17 May 2024. It is the participants themselves who are the main contributors to the forum by applying to host a workshop via this call.

The call to arrange a workshop during the forum is aimed at researchers who already have existing connections in both countries. After being selected, all workshops will be organised parallel to each other, and be open to all participants in the forum. Activities to deepen or create new collaborations come in many different formats. Therefore, we encourage you to take time to consider the best way to organise your workshop to exchange ideas, knowledge and experiences with a broad audience. ✨

The Sustainability Forum is the joint part of the SASUF Research and Innovation Week, where everyone gathers at a hosting institution. The Sustainability Forum is centered around parallel workshops that are co-hosted by researchers from both Sweden and South Africa within any of the six main themes:
♻️ Theme 1: Climate change, natural resources and sustainability
♻️ Theme 2: Education for a sustainable society
♻️ Theme 3: Social transformation through change: Knowledge and social development strategies
♻️ Theme 4: Health - Understanding the burden of disease in Sweden and South Africa
♻️ Theme 5: Sustainable urbanisation, travel and tourism in the 21st Century
♻️ Theme 6: Digital technologies, big data and cybersecurity
