University of the Free State

University of the Free State Welcome! UFS, with campuses in Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa, hosts 39 000+ students across seven faculties. We also have a vibrant student life.

A research-led, student-centered and regionally-engaged university that produces globally competitive graduates and knowledge. Picture a friendly, hip and happening university campus, nestled right in the heart of the Free State capital, Bloemfontein; a university that has produced some of the country’s top thinkers and academics; a university that continues to stand out as a beacon of academic ex

cellence. Of course, this is the University of the Free State, or UFS, one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in South Africa. To our students, staff, alumni, and friends, we are known as Kovsies. Besides our Bloemfontein Campus, we also have a beautiful campus in the rural sandstone mountains of Qwaqwa in the Eastern Free State, and a smaller Open and Distance Learning Campus in Bloemfontein. On these three campuses, a multicultural and diverse student population of more than 30 000 students are educated in English and Afrikaans across seven faculties, connected not only to the rest of the continent but also to the world. Feel free to come take a stroll on campus and experience our way of life, where academic culture, critical scientific reflection, relevant scientific education, pure and applied research, community service, and the development of the total student as part of our academic culture are the building blocks in the creation of tomorrow’s leaders. Many cultural and sporting events make this an exciting place to be, as does our awesome student centre and the special events hosted by all our residences.

As Child Protection Week concludes, the responsibility to protect children must continue beyond awareness campaigns and commemorative days.
Dr Carel van Wyk addressed the long-term impact of childhood trauma, violence, and systemic vulnerability. He also highlighted the importance of collective accountability in creating safer communities for children.
Through teaching, research, therapeutic interventions, and community engagement, the University of the Free State continues to contribute towards the well-being of children and trauma-informed support.
Ultimately, the well-being of children remains one of the clearest reflections of the kind of society we are building – and the kind of future we choose to leave behind.

As we celebrate Youth Month, we honour students like Ntombinkulu Khumalo, a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry student on the UFS Qwaqwa Campus, who is already shaping the future through entrepreneurship, innovation, and community impact.

From developing solutions that support food security and sustainable agriculture to exploring alternative energy sources through biogas production, Khumalo is proving that young people do not have to wait until graduation to make a difference.

Her work has taken her from local communities in Qwaqwa to representing South Africa on an international stage, demonstrating the power of youth-driven innovation to address real-world challenges.

The Department of Occupational Therapy launched its 50th anniversary celebrations in true occupational fashion – with energy, movement, and learning. The department's golden jubilee celebrations will continue for the rest of June. On Friday (29 May), staff and students came together to host an interactive campus engagement event that highlighted the essence of occupational therapy through fun and hands-on activities designed to challenge, inspire, and connect people. The event served as the official kick-off to a month of celebrations commemorating five decades of excellence in occupational therapy education, research, and community engagement.

The Centre for Global Change on the University of the Free State Qwaqwa Campus invites abstract submissions for the Water, Gender, and Social Vulnerability Symposium.

Water insecurity continues to shape everyday life in ways that affect health, dignity, safety, and opportunity. This symposium creates a space for critical engagement on how these challenges intersect with gender inequality and social vulnerability, and how research can speak more directly to lived realities.

Researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and community stakeholders are encouraged to submit their abstracts.

Deadline: 5 June 2026

With an estimated shortage of 4.5 million nurses and 0.31 million midwives expected by the year 2030 – bringing the global shortage of health workers estimated for 2030 to 4.8 million nurses and midwives, according to the WHO, United Nations member states should invest in nurses and midwives as essential pillars of resilient and effective healthcare systems globally. This is according to Dr Sanele Lukhele from the UFS School of Nursing who recently attended the 59th Commission on Population and Development in New York.
