Industry collaboration is central to career readiness at the CTCA.✨💼

Our third-year Motion Design students recently visited to present pitches for the narrative animation projects they are currently developing.

This meaningful collaboration invites students to work with real stories compiled from Mamelani alumni, who were previously part of the organisation’s mentorship and support programmes. Mamelani Projects supports young people as they transition into independent life after leaving Child and Youth Care Centres at 18.

Each student was allocated a section of one of eight narratives and tasked with translating it into an animated personal story. During the visit, students presented their storyboards, style frames and animatics to Mamelani staff and alumni, who responded positively to the quality of the work and the sensitivity with which the stories were approached.

Projects like this help students build career-ready skills in pitching, client engagement, research, visual storytelling and responsible creative practice — while showing how motion design can honour lived experience with care and dignity.

3D Visualisation Elective | Student Work 👏

Animators and anyone with a love for animation will know that this is not “just” a walk cycle.⚡️👾
For this assignment, students were challenged to replicate a walk cycle from Golden Age animation, paying close attention to timing, weight, rhythm, character and the expressive movement principles that make classic animation so enduring.

This exceptional piece by 3rd-year student, Riley Mahaffey, takes inspiration from Pinocchio, translating a recognisable 2D animation reference into a carefully observed 3D performance.
A beautiful example of technical skill, close visual analysis and animation craft in action.✨

Student: Riley Mahaffey
Lecturer: Jarrod Hasenjäger
Elective: 3D Visualisation

Alumni Spotlight!✨👏
We are proud to welcome CTCA alumnus Chris Le Roux back to campus to address our students.

Chris graduated with a degree in Interaction Design in 2022, after taking part in an exciting collaborative project between CTCA and focused on smart systems. He went on to complete his internship at Isoflow and later joined the team, continuing a wonderful relationship between CTCA and one of South Africa’s leading digital product design studios.

Isoflow designs digital products that combine UX, UI, research and data to improve adoption, conversion and scale.💻⚡️

In 2021, Chris won a Bronze Loerie Student Award for his Minecraft Virtual Campus Tour, a project conceptualised during the Covid lockdown.

Chris will share his journey from studying Interaction Design at CTCA to working in the digital product design industry, offering students valuable insight into the transition from student work to professional practice.

What an evening to remember!👏✨🎉

We had the privilege of celebrating our 2025 graduates, their outstanding academic achievements, and the dedication, discipline, and creative growth that went into earning their degrees.

Held at the beautiful Kelvin Grove Club, the ceremony brought together graduates, friends, families, and lecturers for an evening filled with pride, joy, and possibility. With smart suits, stunning outfits, beautiful weather, and an atmosphere of celebration, it was a truly special occasion.

A heartfelt thank you to our guest speaker, Nick Ferreira, Creative Director at Barrows Connected Store, for sharing such inspiring words with our graduates as they step into the next chapter of their creative journeys.

Congratulations to the Class of 2025. We cannot wait to see where your talent, courage, and creativity take you next.🫶✨🎓
