Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela invites members of the university community and the public to the next UCT Inaugural Lecture, to be presented by Professor Nico Fischer from the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment.

The lecture is titled “Catalysis as key enabler of a just and sustainable transition”
and will take place on Tuesday, 9 June 2026 at 17:00 SAST in the Chemical Engineering Seminar Room, Chemical Engineering Building, upper campus.

Professor Fischer is the director of the Catalysis Institute. He is a chemical engineer and catalysis scientist whose work spans academia, industry and technology commercialisation.

Recognised once again among the world’s leading universities, the University of Cape Town (UCT) has placed 276th globally in the 2026 edition of the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) Global 2000 list. Out of 21 291 universities assessed worldwide, UCT ranked in the top 1.3% globally, while also securing second place nationally and in Africa.

UCT congratulates the University of the Witwatersrand on being ranked first in Africa by the CWUR.

The dean of the Centre for Higher Education Development, Professor Kasturi Behari-Leak, delivered her inaugural lecture on 26 May.

Professor Behari-Leak is one of South Africa’s leading scholars in higher education transformation, decolonial pedagogy and curriculum renewal. Her lecture was as autobiographical as it was intellectual – a deeply personal reflection on identity, belonging, curriculum transformation and the future of universities in South Africa and beyond.

A group of Health Sciences students at UCT are doing more than studying medicine. They are actively fundraising to ensure their peers can afford to stay enrolled and complete their degrees.

Members of the Health Sciences Students’ Council (HSSC) Fundraising Committee shared how they are revitalising the 'Impilo Relief Fund' through proactive, student-led advocacy, new partnerships, and a commitment to keeping financial hardship from ending promising careers before they even begin.
