Groundbreakers Uncovered: Faculty of EBE alumni spotlight: Dr Nomihla Wandile Ndlela

From a rural community with limited access to electricity to earning a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Dr Nomihla Ndlela's journey is a testament to resilience, determination and the transformative power of education.

A lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Department at Durban University of Technology in the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, Dr Ndlela's doctoral research focused on advancing the integration of renewable energy sources into power systems through innovative transmission expansion planning and optimisation techniques.

Her work contributes to the development of sustainable, reliable and accessible electricity networks for the future.

Balancing the demands of doctoral studies, academia and motherhood, she remained committed to her goal while continuing to mentor and inspire others through her leadership role in Women in Engineering and the Built Environment (WEBE).

Her achievement reflects not only academic excellence but also a deep commitment to serving communities and shaping the next generation of engineers.

Advancing Research, Innovation and Academic Excellence

The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at Durban University of Technology hosted a Postgraduate Orientation Programme on 2 June 2026.

The orientation provided students with valuable insights into the academic journey, while introducing them to the wide range of support services, research opportunities and institutional resources available to help them succeed.

Acting Executive Dean, Professor Molusiwa Ramabodu, encouraged students to embrace digital learning platforms, adhere to academic requirements and deadlines and remain committed to excellence throughout their postgraduate studies.

The programme was supported by key stakeholders and support units, including the Library and Support Services, Institutional Research Ethics Committee (IREC), Writing Centre, Student Governance, Research Capacity Development and Postgraduate Support, Finance, Research and Postgraduate Support-Grants Management Division and the IEEE Student Branch.

We wish all our postgraduate students success as they continue their exciting chapter of advanced learning, research and innovation.
