Buffalo City TVET College, in partnership with I CAN 4IR and Heineken South Africa, successfully hosted a two-day Binge Drinking Awareness Workshop at the Belgravia Hostel from 28โ29 May 2026.
The workshop aimed to educate students about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and its impact on their academic performance, health, finances, and overall well-being. The initiative comes in response to growing concerns that some students spend a significant portion of their bursary allowances on alcohol, resulting in poor class attendance and academic challenges.
During the two-day programme, students participated in informative presentations that highlighted the harmful effects of binge drinking and provided practical strategies for resisting peer pressure and making responsible lifestyle choices. The sessions also focused on the long-term health risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption and the importance of maintaining a balanced student life.
On the first day, students and staff members engaged in an interactive panel discussion where they openly discussed challenges faced by students due to uncontrolled drinking habits. The discussion created a platform for meaningful dialogue, allowing participants to share experiences, raise concerns, and ask questions to the panel of stakeholders.
The second day featured engaging group activities where students were divided into teams and assigned discussion topics related to alcohol abuse, decision-making, and student wellness. These activities encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and peer learning while reinforcing the key messages of the workshop.
Buffalo City TVET College remains committed to promoting student wellness and creating awareness on issues that affect student success. Through partnerships with organisations such as I CAN 4IR and Heineken South Africa, the College continues to empower students with knowledge and skills that support healthy and responsible lifestyles.
The awareness campaign continues at the John Knox Bokwe (JKB) Campus from tomorrow until Friday. Students are encouraged to attend and take advantage of this valuable opportunity to learn more about the effects of binge drinking and the support available to help them make informed choices.
