Update: applications, registrations, study material and assignment 1 deadlines
I applied for admission in 2018. When can I register?
Applicants who applied for admission during the extended application period in 2018 and who received confirmation that their application has been accepted may register for the 2018 academic year from 12 to 20 February 2018. The final date for initial minimum payments (for students who do not qualify for the extended NSFAS grant, so that their registration can be finalised) is 20 February 2018.

For more information, please visit Unisa's registration website at www.unisa.ac.za/register

Qualifying students are also reminded to apply for the 2018 extended NSFAS grant by 20 February 2018. For more information, visit www.unisa.ac.za/ExtendedNSFAS2018

I have registered, but my registration is still pending. When will my registration be finalised?
We are aware that some students have submitted their 2018 registrations, but that their registrations are reflecting as "still in progress".

There have, unfortunately, been some delays in processing registrations due to protest action and the re-opening of applications for first-time registering students. We are, however, working hard to finalise the processing of all registrations, but most particularly first semester registrations. We hope to have this process completed by 20 February 2018.

My registration has not been finalised. Can I still access my study material?
While you wait for your registration to be finalised, you may access your study material via the "Download study material" link on Unisa's registration website.

I've missed some assignment due dates. What should I do?
Due to the late finalisation of registrations, some students may miss some assignment submission dates.

To ensure that every Unisa student has the opportunity to submit assignments, the closing date for all first semester assignments scheduled before 13 April 2018 has been changed to 13 April 2018. Unisa will therefore accept, mark and process your assignments until 13 April 2018 if you are unable to submit them by the published due dates. You are, however, encouraged to submit your assignments as soon as you can. This extension is applicable to all assignments that contribute to admission to examinations, but excludes assignments for the online signature modules, all practicals and modules in Social Auxiliary Work (HCert SAW).

Walk-in applications to open on Saturday 27 January 2018
Unisa re-opened applications on 15 January 2018 for first-time entering undergraduate students as a result of extended funding opportunities available to first-time entering students. The deadline for applications was originally 19 January 2018, but this was extended to 23 January 2018 as a result of the strike action at Unisa. During this time, Unisa has received more than 36 000 applications, most of which were submitted online. Online applications closed at midnight on Tuesday 23 January 2018.

As a university, however, we understand that there may still be a need for some students to apply via a self-help station at one of the Unisa regional offices. Unisa regional offices will, therefore, be open from 08:00 to 12:00 on Saturday 27 January 2018.

Please note: This decision is dependent on the availability of staff and whether the labour dispute is settled by Friday. We advise those students who wish to make use of this opportunity to visit the Unisa website on Friday for confirmation as to whether Unisa's regional offices will be open on Saturday 27 January 2018.

For more information on Unisa's application process and the documentation required for an undergraduate application, please visit Unisa's application website at

Communique with Management

Good evening

This serves as a deep concern on the challenges faced by students to access the university,we have had an influx of students that come to the institution who wants to study and access wifi for academic purposes, unfortunately the gates are locked and students are denied access, questions asked by students demand the response of management. these are some but not limited to the following.

who locked the gates of unisa?

why our rights as students are compromised as we are denied access?

why are we not allowed to return books that we borrowed to the library as the machine is available to receive books without employee assistance, will unisa be responsible for fees of late returns of books?

what will happen now that we are writing examinations will management compensate the time lost for studies?

why are the extensions not granted as the fault is not with us as students?

we need printouts with with university stamp for study fee quotations for submission to work so that our fees are paid and we have missed deadlines because we cant get assistance, will university pay for our fees now that its their fault?

these are the issues we raised as SRC but we still have challenges and they have indicated that tomorrow they will force entrance and stay until the normal time they usually spend to study in the institution,as SRC we request responses as we previously brought these matters to your attention which includes extension to cover the days lost from the day of strike action, below is the message we received from a student and his group we need to copy them your response.

UNISA students and prospective students should we have a counter strike or what? As far as i understand only staff/nehawu members on strike. If so why are the securities of unisa East London not allowing us to enter the premises as we are preparing our Jan/Feb exams? To add we now have to spend money for internet cafes etc, which in my opinion is rubbish.

As per the court interdict released by the labour court of south Africa in Johannesburg on the 19 January 2017 read as follows on point 6.8 " restraining the respondents (staff/nehawu members) from coming to within a radius of 150 meters from any entrance of the institution" continue reading 6.3 and 6.4, now ngabo aba banika iOrders kwiSecurities ukuba basivalele pha.

Exactly what is the role of the SRC, as we have already lost a week due to this strike? We as students call upon SRC members to intervene on this matter, or as students we will be forced to take matters into our own hands. Sibhatele kaloku, bayasimosha ababantu asinandawo yokufundela maarn. Otherwise sobangena ngeVosho ngoku skhathele.

Hoping that you will find this in order and respond promptly

UNISA Strike action

Unisa EC SRC has noted the concerns raised by the entire student fraternity on a strike action by the employees of Unisa today the 17th of January 2018 . As a result of this sudden strike, the students were locked outside the gate and denied access to study for their supplementary exams and final exams for year modules.

As SRC we respect the right of workers of Unisa to Strike when their demands are not met by the Employer. However, our constitutional mandate is to ensure that the right of the students to study and register is not compromised by any action . It is important to note that we have engaged and made demands to management so as to ensure that there is an extension of the registration,
applications and payments. We are firm on that demand as mandated by the students.

We have also been informed that there will be a press briefing this afternoon on what will happen moving forward. In addition to that you can also tune on news hour from 6 to 7pm on Umhobo wenene and also expect another briefing on S.A. fm tomorrow at 10.30am where there will be discussion on the impact of the strike action to students.we also expect that a statement will be posted on Unisa website.

We request that the students check update and remain calm on this unfortunate situation that affects them. More info on page UNISA Eastern Cape SRC.

An inconvinience caused by this strike action is sincerely regrettable.

Yours in students struggle
