Seminar on Practice-based Doctorates
Tuesday 1 October 2024 | 14:00-15:30

Date & Time: Tuesday 1 October 2024, 14:00-15:30
Zoom Registration Link: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0lceChrD8pHt0K3Vl0UKriqwE5uF-Ydm4N

Practice-based doctorates include a practical component which is assessed as part of the final doctoral submission. While more common in disciplines such as the arts or creative writing, the value of practice-based research is becoming increasingly acknowledged across a wider range of discplines and faculties. This is new territory to some, bringing up questions as to how one structures a practice-based programme, how such doctoral research can be supported and supervised, and how it might be assessed. In this seminar, our panelists will share hands-on experience of supervising practice-based doctoral studies and managing practice-based programmes.
Panelists:

Professor David Medalie - Director of the Unit for Creative Writing and Professor in the Department of English, University of Pretoria
Professor MMaureen de Jager- Head of the Fine Art Department and Deputy Dean of Humanities, Rhodes University | Programme developer and co-ordinator, Rhodes University PhD in Fine Art
Professor Kathryn Smith - Chair of the Visual Arts Department, Stellenbosch Univeristy | Director of VIZ.Lab
Dr Karolien Perold-Bull - Coordinator and Senior lecturer: Visual Communication Design | Chair of the Higher Degrees and Research Committee (HDRC), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Stellenbosch University

Plagiarism in the Academy
(How we’ve missed the point and what we can do about it)

You are invited to a public lecture that looks at international research on plagiarism and reviews the responses by universities around the world.

Prepare to be surprised.

The lecture draws on literature to look at why people plagiarise, and which educational responses address the underlying problems. (And what all this might mean in the age of AI.)

The lecture is open to everyone who is interested in academic writing, knowledge-making, plagiarism, disciplinary policies and processes, and academic integrity.

Time & Date: 1pm to 2pm, Thursday 20 July
Venue: Eden Grove Blue
Presenter: Professor Sioux McKenna,
Director of Centre for Postgraduate Studies, Rhodes University
