What could be better than alumni and lifelong friends supporting one another? Recently reunited in Johannesburg, Sovash Chetty moved the application for admission of Vuya Noka, while Kiora Soke shared the special occasion — with just a few more months to go before her own admission.

It is indeed a small world for the Rhodes Law Class of 2016, a decade later. Recently, in the Mthatha High Court, alumni from the same class found themselves on opposing sides of a significant case. Specifically, Sarah Cawood (nee Roberts) from Eversheds, with Xolelwa Mkula as the CA, represented the applicant, a SANRAL contractor, while Naso Zilwa appeared as counsel for the community. Unfortunately Xolelwa missed the photo op!

In more news from the BLA Rhodes chapter: Students hosted a successful “CV Skills: Strategy and Expectations in South Africa” workshop, aimed at equipping students with practical guidance on CV drafting, cover letters, and preparing for entry into the legal profession.

The event was well attended and highly engaging, with students actively participating in discussions and the Q&A session.

The organisers were very appreciative of the efforts of their speakers for sharing their expertise and experiences:• Mr Shaun Bergover from the Law Clinix;• Ms Rethabile Sindi from the Legal Resources Centre;• Mr Lesley Sabelo Ndlovu; and• Mr Nduduzo Mvundla of Whitesides Attorneys.

Thank you as well to all students who attended and contributed to the success of the event.

The Black Lawyers Association student chapter and the Rhodes Law Society faced off in an exciting moot recently on a minor’s medical autonomy case. Both societies fielded senior and junior teams, with BLA emerging victorious in both rounds - winning as Respondents (senior) and Applicants (junior). A big well done to all participants, and thank you to our judges, Law Faculty Teaching Assistants Leeroy Chenga and Ayabonga Ndzuse.
