Postgraduate students from Geography, IWR (Institute for Water Research) and DIFS Rhodes University (Departmet of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science) are competing in the international Water4Future Student Hackathon this week. Student teams from around the globe are participating in the competition organised by the UNESCO International Centre for Water in Montpellier.

Students are working to come up with innovative solutions to a water-related issue. They are being supported by a team of expert advisors drawn from different parts of the university.

Yesterday we had our first good rainfall of 2026. It’s been a hot, humid and yet dry summer. We’ve had grey skies and ominous rumblings, but the cleansing and rejuvenating rain has not been forthcoming. Yesterday’s rain was not just relief, but a signal of new growth to come.

Today, it’s the first day of term at Rhodes University and our lecturing staff has been delivering their introductory lectures for Earth Science 101, Geography 201 and Geography 302. We are excited to welcome our students and to stimulate their growth in 2026.
