From solar power to a full Science Centre: UJ in partnership with BarloworldCAT open a new STEM lab at Hanyani High School in Limpopo.

The facility, equipped with microscopes, 3D printing technology and digital learning resources, builds on UJ’s long-running Societal Impact work in the region and creates new opportunities for learners to develop practical skills for the future.

The project demonstrates what can be achieved when universities and industry partner to turn knowledge, innovation and investment into meaningful societal impact.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) in partnership with BarloworldCAT has officially opened a state-of-the-art Science Centre at Hanyani Secondary School in Limpopo.

Equipped with microscopes, 3D printing technology and digital learning resources, the new facility will give learners greater access to practical STEM education and help open pathways to careers in science, engineering and technology.

The Science Centre builds on a decade-long UJ Societal Impact project that has already transformed education and living conditions across communities in the Tshipise district.

This marks another milestone in the University’s transformative Societal Impact project by addressing critical infrastructure needs for communities.

The groundbreaking project, which began in 2014, spans several villages, including Gwakwani, Matatani, and Mbodi. Residents have significantly benefited from sustainable solutions in energy, water, connectivity, education, food security, and healthcare, all aimed at addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The project has since been expanded to Hanyani Secondary School, which now boasts solar panels and a learning facility (known as the Tshumisano Learning Centre) fully equipped with computers, books, and other learning materials. This centre is fully equipped with computers, books, and other learning materials. The benefits have been immediate, as the school has seen its matric pass rate improve from 57% to an impressive 95% in just two years. The project has since become a reference for how universities can translate knowledge into practical solutions that improve lives while advancing sustainable development.

Today, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and BarloworldCAT will open a new Science Centre at Hanyani Secondary School in Limpopo.

The fully equipped lab will give up to 30 learners at a time hands-on access to Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, with microscopes, 3D printers and digital learning resources.

This builds on years of work in the community, from solar power and clean water to the Tshumisano Learning Centre and last year's record 92.1% matric pass rate.
