“This journey taught me that it’s never too late to rewrite your story. As a mom returning to school in my 30s, there were moments of doubt, sleepless nights, and sacrifices along the way, but I kept going. Not just for myself, but to show my child what perseverance looks like.

I could have been a 30-something without a degree, but today I’m a 30-something with a BEng Tech in Extraction Metallurgy. Every late-night assignment, every challenge, and every moment of exhaustion was worth it.

To anyone thinking it’s too late to go back to school: your age, responsibilities, or setbacks do not define your future. Keep going, one step, one assignment, one day at a time. Your journey will inspire more people than you know.” ✨

Today, the University of Johannesburg officially unveiled the Ihron Rensburg Residence at the Soweto Campus, honouring former Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Ihron Rensburg for his contribution to the University’s growth, transformation and impact.

The programme featured reflections from Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi, a tribute video celebrating Prof Rensburg’s tenure from 2005 to 2017, and an address by Prof Rensburg himself, who spoke about the people, experiences and values that shaped his journey.

Guests were also treated to a moving vernacular poem by student Mfundiso Mokape, a musical performance by Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society, and a special presentation of a student-created embroidery artwork inspired by Soweto, the campus and the residence’s new identity.

The highlight of the day was the unveiling of the residence plaque by Prof Ihron Rensburg, Chairperson of Council Dr Yondela Ndema and Prof Mpedi, followed by a spirited war cry from the residence’s first-year students.

The unveiling marks a significant moment in UJ’s history, celebrating a legacy that continues to inspire students, staff and the broader University community.

The University of Johannesburg is honouring the legacy of former Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Ihron Rensburg, through the unveiling of the Ihron Rensburg Residence.

The event brings together University leadership, staff, students and guests to celebrate Prof Rensburg’s contribution to shaping UJ’s identity, growth and impact during his tenure from 2005 to 2017. The programme includes tributes, reflections, performances and the official unveiling of the residence plaque.
