Mandela Day on July 18 is an annual international day adopted by the United Nations. It is more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy; it is a global movement to take his life’s work into a new century and change our world for the better. Mandela Day asks us all to embrace Madiba’s values and honour his legacy through an act of kindness. Who knows, it might leave you inspired enough to make every day a Mandela Day!

30/04/2026

In 2009, Nelson Mandela called on the world to honour his birthday through action in communities.

As he stepped back from public life, he placed the responsibility in our hands. Mandela Day was declared by the United Nations that same year, affirming it as a global call to action.

As we begin building towards on 18 July, we return to that call in a world that continues to grow more unequal, uncertain and divided.

That is why the theme remains: it is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity. Over the coming months, we will be sharing more and amplifying initiatives from across South Africa and the world.
