In 2009, Nelson Mandela called on the world to honour his birthday through action in communities.
As he stepped back from public life, he placed the responsibility in our hands. Mandela Day was declared by the United Nations that same year, affirming it as a global call to action.
As we begin building towards on 18 July, we return to that call in a world that continues to grow more unequal, uncertain and divided.
That is why the theme remains: it is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity. Over the coming months, we will be sharing more and amplifying initiatives from across South Africa and the world.
