Due to the overwhelming response to Kim Berman’s exhibition, Remembering and Forgetting: Landscapes in Dialogue, we are delighted to announce that the closing date has been extended until 12 September at the UJ Art Gallery.

Broadly organised into six overlapping themes—State of Urgency, Sunflowers in Mourning, Fire and Smoke, Mining and Damaged Landscapes, Artists Books, and Fire Revisited—the exhibition explores the recurring dialogue between different landscapes, offering new perspectives on enduring social and political issues while revealing how historical themes continue to resonate in contemporary contexts.

This powerful show marks Kim’s first solo exhibition in 15 years and celebrates her remarkable 31-year journey at UJ as she steps into retirement.

It also coincides with a moment of reflection for the institution during UJ’s 20-year anniversary. Walkabout with Kim Berman:

We had the privilege of sitting down with renowned artist, educator and activist Kim Berman ahead of her upcoming solo exhibition, Remembering and Forgetting: Landscapes in Dialogue, opening tommorrow evening, 7 August at the UJ Art Gallery at 18:00.

As UJ celebrates 20 years and Berman prepares to retire, this exhibition arrives as both a personal reflection and a celebration of legacy. Featuring a combination of new and earlier works, it traces a journey through decades of socially engaged practice, layered with recent experiences of loss and renewal.

In our conversation, Berman shared how a devastating fire at her home became a profound source of inspiration.

In a deeply symbolic gesture, she sprinkled ash from the ruins directly into her prints allowing grief, memory, and transformation to physically and conceptually live within the work.

We also had the privilege of witnessing her printmaking process firsthand - a quiet, intentional act that speaks to her lifelong commitment to collaboration, transformation, and social engagement through the arts.
