Yesterday, the Johannesburg Business School hosted the second edition of the JBS Fireside Chats, featuring Tim Modise in conversation with Eskom Chairperson Mteto Nyati.

For years, load shedding became part of everyday life. Then suddenly, one day, the lights stayed on. So, what really happened behind the scenes?

This second session unpacked how years of poor maintenance, operational inefficiencies, and governance challenges weakened Eskom.

Dr Mteto highlighted that the turnaround required difficult leadership decisions, aggressive maintenance strategies, and stronger operational discipline, which helped stabilise the electricity supply.

More than a discussion on electricity, it also reflected on the importance of capable leadership, accountability, and long-term thinking in rebuilding institutions during times of crisis.

The conversation further touched on concerns involving the City of Johannesburg’s municipal debt and the broader challenges facing South Africa’s energy ecosystem.

One message stood out clearly throughout the evening: meaningful change requires leaders willing to make difficult decisions in the long-term interests of society.

Join us for the next JBS Fireside Chats as we continue unpacking pressing issues faced by South Africans.

Inspiring closing words shared by our Executive Dean for the 2026 graduatesπŸŽ“βœ¨πŸ§‘

"As you gaze at these majestic vistas and contemplate your next climb, remember the words of Major Mandisa Mfeka, South Africa's first black female combat pilot, who took to the skies in a Hawks formation air display, and said: "The sky is not the limit, but the baseline."" πŸš€πŸŒ

May these words continue to inspire you to pursue greatness with courage, ambition, and purpose

Congratulations, Class of 2026, your future awaits! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ“πŸ‘

This past week, the Women Leadership Development Programme cohort had its first immersion experience, stepping beyond the classroom and putting their leadership into action.

The group visited Mpilisweni Secondary School in Katlehong, a school focused on Mathematics, Science, and ITC, with a strong emphasis on manufacturing development. Despite challenging socio-economic circumstances, the school continues to excel, maintaining a matric pass rate of 85% and above over the past five years. The visit served as a powerful lesson in resilience, vision, and the transformative impact of education.

The cohort also visited the Home Of Hope, a home dedicated to supporting and empowering girls in need. This experience encouraged meaningful reflection on compassion and social responsibility.

Throughout the immersion, the cohort had the opportunity to apply their leadership skills in real-world settings, engaging with communities, reflecting on social challenges, and learning from individuals and organisations creating meaningful change.

An inspiring experience filled with growth, learning, and reflection. 🌍✨
