We congratulate Prof Elmarie Fourie on her participation in a research project selected for support under CODESRIA’s 2026 Meaning-making Research Initiatives (MRI) competition.

Titled “Navigating Informality Across the Life Course: Disability, Gender, and Women’s Livelihoods in African Informal Cross-Border Economies”, the project is led by Dr Zuzeka Prudence Mkra and was selected from more than 450 applications through a rigorous evaluation process.

Working alongside Dr Mkra and Willene Holness, Prof Fourie will contribute to research examining how women with disabilities navigate informal cross-border trade, with a focus on the Musina–Beitbridge border corridor.

The project aims to generate evidence-based policy insights that advance disability rights, social protection and more equitable economic opportunities across African informal economies.

Congratulations to Prof Fourie and the research team on this significant achievement! 👏

Today, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and BarloworldCAT will open a new Science Centre at Hanyani Secondary School in Limpopo.

The fully equipped lab will give up to 30 learners at a time hands-on access to Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, with microscopes, 3D printers and digital learning resources.

This builds on years of work in the community, from solar power and clean water to the Tshumisano Learning Centre and last year's record 92.1% matric pass rate.
