Last week, our Second Year Graphic Design students had the privilege of welcoming internationally renowned Johannesburg-based designer Fred Swart for the launch of their first project of the year. More than just a graphic designer, Swart is a builder of worlds.
With over three decades of experience, Swart’s work has shaped major architectural and cultural platforms across Africa, Europe, and the United States. His portfolio includes identity and publication projects for institutions such as the African Futures Institute (Accra), the Bernard & Anne Spitzer School of Architecture (New York), the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and the Venice Biennale of Architecture, where he was a participant and developed design collateral for the 19th International Architecture Exhibition.
In an engaging and inspiring session, Fred explored the powerful intersection between design and music, unpacking how rhythm, tempo, mood, and cultural context can inform visual language. He also shared samples from his latest work, offering students a rare opportunity to experience the physicality, craft, and detail of international exhibition design up close.
The response from students was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, setting an energised and ambitious tone for the year ahead.
