Lovedale TVET College recently hosted a successful art exhibition under the theme "Singobani" ("Who Are We?"), attracting between 80 and 100 visitors on its opening day. The exhibition also featured artists from the broader Buffalo City Metropolitan (BCM) area, creating a vibrant platform for artistic expression, cultural reflection, and community engagement.

The exhibition showcased a diverse range of artworks, including photographs, illustrations, paintings, drawings, ceramics, mixed media pieces, and an installation. Through these various forms of art, artists explored themes of identity, heritage, history, and belonging.

A key highlight of the exhibition was the installation and several artworks that celebrated Lovedale's rich intellectual and cultural legacy. The works paid tribute to S.E.K. Mqhayi, Steve Biko, and Tiyo Soga, whose contributions continue to shape South African society. Another significant feature was the large book installation representing uSamson, recognised as the first isiXhosa novel ever published. The artwork highlighted the importance of preserving literary heritage, particularly as no known hard copy or digital version of the novel currently exists.

Speaking on the significance of the festival, Ms Zimasa Swartbooi highlighted that the uMthiza Arts Festival is more than a celebration of creativity; it is a platform that preserves culture, celebrates African identity, and creates opportunities for artists and communities to engage in meaningful dialogue. She noted that the festival plays a vital role in promoting the arts as a tool for cultural preservation, social transformation, and the sharing of African stories, ensuring that African heritage continues to inspire future generations.

Guest speaker Dr Mshayi encouraged attendees to reflect on their African identity and heritage, speaking on the importance of understanding who we are as Africans. Welcoming guests to the event, Mr Xolile Madliki, Acting Principal of Lovedale TVET College, emphasized that art remains one of the most powerful tools for expressing community issues, preserving culture, and safeguarding heritage for future generations.

"Art has often been neglected, yet it remains one of the most powerful ways of expressing community issues and preserving our heritage and culture," said Madliki.

He further noted that while the arts are often overlooked, they play a vital role in documenting society's stories and experiences.

"The uMthiza Arts Festival is more than a celebration of creativity; it is a platform that preserves culture, celebrates African identity, and creates opportunities for artists and communities to engage in meaningful dialogue," said Swartbooi.

Dr Mshayi also challenged attendees to reflect deeply on their identity as Africans.

"Understanding who we are as Africans is essential in preserving our heritage and shaping our future," he said.

The exhibition successfully created a space for dialogue, reflection, and appreciation of African identity while showcasing the creativity and talent of both students and community artists. Through the theme "Singobani," visitors were encouraged to celebrate their roots, embrace their heritage, and reflect on the question: "Who are we?".

Lovedale College Rugby continues to make the institution proud after another impressive performance in the BRU Premier League, where the team secured a hard-fought 36โ€“21 victory against Africans Rugby Club at Breidbach Fields under difficult conditions.

The victory sees Lovedale College remain at the top of the Premier League standings with four wins from four matches and a total of 20 points, highlighting the teamโ€™s determination, discipline and growing momentum in the competition. The team has also maintained an impressive points difference of +81 as they continue their unbeaten run.

Speaking after the match, Coach Ziniko Dumaphi praised the players for their resilience and fighting spirit throughout the game.

โ€œWe played under very difficult circumstances, but the boys showed great character and managed to pull through with a bonus-point victory. The first half was not our best attacking performance, but in the second half we came back stronger and gave everything. The substitutions also made a huge difference and helped change the momentum of the game,โ€ said Dumaphi.

Qayiya Lalela was named Man of the Match after delivering an exceptional performance and scoring three tries for the team. Additional tries came from Siyanda Tiki and Sinoxolo Rola, while Sokhana Gwicana successfully added the conversions and penalties that helped secure the important victory.

As the Premier League campaign continues, the college calls upon students, staff, alumni, community members and potential stakeholders to rally behind the team and support the development of rugby at Lovedale College. Such support plays a vital role in motivating student-athletes and strengthening sporting excellence within rural TVET institutions.

The College congratulates the rugby team, coaching staff and management on their continued success and wishes them well for the upcoming fixtures.

Lovedale TVET College recently hosted a successful Walk In My Shoes Sensitization Campaign at the King Campus, aimed at promoting disability awareness, inclusion, and support for students living with disabilities. The practical engagement session was facilitated by REHAB Organisation, an organisation committed to empowering and supporting persons with disabilities through advocacy, awareness, and inclusive practices.

The event was attended by student leadership representatives and support staff members, who actively participated in discussions and practical activities designed to deepen understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by students with disabilities. Participants described the session as insightful and impactful, highlighting the importance of creating a more inclusive and supportive college environment.

Speaking during the session, the newly elected College President, Sibahle Pringle, emphasized the importance of ongoing disability awareness initiatives within the institution. โ€œThese engagements help us understand the daily realities faced by students living with disabilities and remind us of the responsibility we have as student leaders to advocate for inclusivity across the college,โ€ he said. Pringle further recommended that similar workshops be rolled out to the broader student community to strengthen awareness and understanding across the student body.

He also encouraged students living with disabilities not to feel discouraged or stigmatized about disclosing their conditions. โ€œWhen students come forward, the institution is able to provide the necessary support and interventions to help them succeed academically and socially,โ€ he added.

Also addressing attendees was Mr. Nceba Nyanda, Administration Officer: Student Counseling and Career Guidance Unit, who reassured students that support structures at the college remain committed to student wellbeing and inclusion. โ€œOur offices are always open to students who require assistance, guidance, or support. We are working towards creating an environment where every student feels valued and supported,โ€ he said.

Mr. Nyanda further encouraged lecturers and staff members to participate in sensitization programmes and inclusive engagement activities. โ€œThese sessions help staff members better understand the different challenges students may experience and equip them with knowledge on how to respond and support students more effectively,โ€ he noted.

He also shared that the college is in the process of acquiring assistive devices to improve accessibility and learning support for students living with disabilities. According to Mr. Nyanda, this forms part of the institutionโ€™s broader commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for all students.

The Walk In My Shoes campaign formed part of Lovedale TVET Collegeโ€™s ongoing commitment to inclusion, empathy, and equal opportunities for all students. The event concluded with a renewed call for continued awareness, collaboration, and action toward creating a campus culture where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered
