Grand Tour student Floris van der Laan, experienced hands-on experience through the Wildlife Management minor at Stenden South Africa as part of a broader international learning journey.

During this minor, students worked on the development and management of their own wildlife park, including eco-lodges, with a strong focus on conservation, sustainable park management and the balance between wildlife protection and tourism.

His time at Stenden South Africa gave him the opportunity to engage directly with sustainability in practice and experience learning in a unique natural environment. Experiences like these give students the chance to apply their knowledge in a practical setting while building valuable skills for the future.

Earlier this year, Lars van Son joined us in Port Alfred as part of a group of international master’s students from NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Their five-week field research programme focused on the sustainable development of tourism and hospitality along the Sunshine Coast, placing students directly in the landscapes, businesses and communities they were studying.

For Lars, South Africa became a place of both exploration and meaningful academic work. While his time here included Port Alfred, West Beach, Schotia Safaris, Hogsback and Vergelegen Wine Estate, much of the programme was dedicated to researching the local hospitality and tourism sector. Together with his team, Lars contributed to a comprehensive proposal developed for the community at the end of their stay.

For Stenden South Africa student Josh Witthuln, his internship has moved onto an international stage. 👏🏻

Josh is currently completing his internship at the NATO-accredited Crisis Management and Disaster Response Centre of Excellence (CMDR COE), where he is gaining first-hand experience in a multidisciplinary professional environment. His time at the Centre has given him valuable insight into how cooperation, training, research and policy development come together to strengthen preparedness and resilience in the face of complex challenges, including natural and human-made hazards, hybrid threats, polycrisis and climate-related risks.
