Today our first-year HRM students had the privilege of learning from Mr Yibanathi Maqina an NMU alumnus, who reminded us that your career is about far more than securing a job—it’s about the value you create for others ✨.
Drawing from his own journey as an NMU student, Mr Maqina shared how getting involved beyond the classroom helped shape his career. Throughout his time at the University, he actively participated in numerous initiatives, including Peer Learning ,serving as a Health and Safety Officer at his student res and mentoring first-year students. His story was a powerful reminder that growth comes from embracing opportunities, building relationships, and stepping outside your comfort zone.
Some of the biggest takeaways from today’s session:
• Confidence and communication can open doors that qualifications alone cannot.
• Employers don’t just hire CVs—they hire people who are willing to learn, take ownership, and bring fresh ideas.
• Growth begins when you step outside your comfort zone.
• Your environment, friendships, and network have the power to shape your future.
• Every experience is worth documenting because your journey becomes your story.
Perhaps the most powerful reminder of the day:
💬 Money is attracted to value.
Keep asking questions. Keep building skills. Keep saying yes to opportunities that challenge you. Your career starts long before graduation 🎓.
A sincere thank you to Mr Yibanathi Maqina for returning to his alma mater to invest in the next generation of HR professionals. Your authentic story and practical insights left our students inspired and empowered to take ownership of their career journeys🚀👏.
