PGRS & Part-time Scholarship Information Session - 11 September 2026 (11h00 - 12h00)

Nelson Mandela University invites interested students and supervisors to a hybrid Information Session on the Postgraduate Research Scholarships (PGRS).

The PGRS Call for applications is open to South African citizens, permanent residents, and international candidates who plan to pursue full-time Honours, Masters, or Doctoral studies at Nelson Mandela University in the 2027 academic year. The part-time scholarship is also available to eligible students who will be enrolled in Masters or Doctotal degrees that by design are only offered part-time at Nelson Mandela University.

Call for applications: ALC Scholarship/Bursary support 2027

The African Laser Centre initiative (ALC) is an open, non-exclusive partnership to stimulate innovation, research and technology development in lasers and their applications across Africa. In support of this broad objective, it seeks local, continental and global partnerships. The ALC is recognised as an AU-NEPAD Flagship Programme. To reach this objective, the ALC has an active ALC Research Collaboration Programme, a conference, workshops and topical school programme (the ALC Training Programme), an ALC Knowledge Exchange Programme and an ALC Scholarship Programme for African students to enrol and do postgraduate degrees at a South African tertiary institution in a laser- and laser application related research field.

Support for all ALC activities is subject to funding availability.

Closing date for applications: Friday, 16 October 2026

SASUF+ Fieldwork and Data Collection Stipend

- Funding: R60,000 for South African students and SEK 30,000 for Swedish students.
- Eligible activities: International travel, accommodation, local transport, visa/insurance costs and other fieldwork-related expenses.
- Eligibility: Students must be registered at a SASUF+ partner university and undertake fieldwork linked to their thesis/degree project.
- Mobility: A minimum stay of 10 days in the host country is required.
- Students need academic supervision at both their home institution and the host/partner environment.
- Preference will be given to projects linked to existing SASUF-funded research groups, although students without a formal connection to a SASUF-funded project may also apply where there is a strong South Africa–Sweden collaboration.
- Application deadline: 15 October 2026.
- Awarded mobility must be completed by 1 June 2028.

3MT (3-Minute Thesis) on Day 3 of Research & Innovation Week 2026!

The 3MT Competition gives PhD students are given three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. It challenges them to consolidate their ideas and research findings so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.

nGAP Seminar on Day 2 of Research & Innovation Week 2026!

Mr Jacques Welgemoed from the Department of Mechatronics Engineering here at NMU gave the lecture 'Beyond the Battlefield: Repurposing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Technology for South African Challenges', showing a variety of projects he has worked on and the deliverables involved, including several prototypes. UAVs are autonomous aerial vehicles, known more commonly as drones, with the examples provided giving evidence that technology originally built for the military can have a variety of applications in a multitude of different situations. Thank you to Prof Farouk Smith, the moderator for the event, Mr Jacques Welgemoed for his lecture, and Mr Damian Mooney, the discussant for the Q&A session.

We hope that they will continue to display the rigour and passion for their work in their postgraduate journeys and beyond.
