When some of the world's leading media scholars, journalists and communication experts gathered in Africa to rethink the future of media in the digital age, history was made at North-West University.

At a historic first, the NWU hosted the regional International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference on African soil at the Potchefstroom Campus.

Under the theme, "Reimagining Media and Political Communication in Africa: Voices, Power and Participation in the Digital Age," delegates from across the globe explored some of the most pressing challenges shaping society today, including the impact of artificial intelligence on elections, misinformation, and the evolving role of community radio.

The conference featured keynote addresses by Dr Lungile Binza, Chief Operations Officer of the SABC, and Prof Robert B. Horwitz from UC San Diego. NWU leadership also highlighted the importance of African perspectives in shaping global conversations on media, communication and democracy.

A landmark moment for African scholarship. A powerful platform for global dialogue.

What does it truly mean to fight for environmental justice? 🌍

At a recent Prestige Lecture hosted by the NWU Faculty of Law, attendees were prompted to look beyond legislation and courtrooms and consider how advocacy, research, and community voices can drive meaningful environmental change.

From the constitutional right to a healthy environment to the lived experiences of communities impacted by mining, the discussion underscored the need to listen to and protect vulnerable populations.

At the NWU, conversations like these bridge academic insight and the real-world challenges our society faces.

For Michael Wade, making an impact starts with showing up for others.

As a fourth-year Industrial Engineering student, Michael's passion for service began long before university through volunteering in his community. Today, that same commitment drives him to support fellow students while preparing for a career dedicated to solving complex challenges that can benefit South Africa.

Whether through student leadership initiatives or projects such as NWU's Barefoot Day, where students come together to collect and donate clothing for those in need, Michael believes that meaningful change starts with small acts of service.

From finding his way around campus as a first-year to becoming a student leader, his journey is a reminder that growth, purpose and impact often begin when we choose to serve others.

Michael's success is a powerful reminder that excellence is built long before the final whistle. During his time at NWU, he developed both the practical and academic foundations that helped shape his understanding of the game, giving him the tools to perform at the highest level.

By combining world-class academic opportunities with elite sporting development, NWU empowers student-athletes to excel both on the field and beyond it.
