Prof. Hanlie Smuts from the Department of Informatics, UP Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, University of Pretoria and Corlia Smuts, Informatics PhD candidate and part-time lecturer in the UP: Department of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (SMTE), visited the Faculty of Organization and Informatics at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. During the Time4Science session, which formed part of the Erasmus+ programme, Hanlie shared perspectives on “Crossing boundaries and crafting futures: The role of industry partnerships in transdisciplinary research”. She invited faculty members, industry partners, and colleagues to step beyond traditional boundaries and collaborate across disciplines. By creating new knowledge together from our diverse perspectives and applying transdisciplinary approaches, we can craft better futures together.

Last evening, the University of Pretoria, together with other Gauteng universities, signed an Umbrella Memorandum of Understanding with the Gauteng Provincial Government. The agreement reinforces collaboration between the academic sector and government, highlighting UP’s commitment to contributing research, expertise and innovation to support evidence-based policy making.

Through this partnership UP and its counterparts will work with the province in areas such as inclusive economic growth, innovation and development, digital governance, social transformation, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence to enhance public service. The MoU reflects UP’s ongoing dedication to applying knowledge and research capacity to strengthen Gauteng’s vision of becoming a data-led, globally competitive city region.
