The Young African Women in Science Network (YAWSN) was conceptualised in 2012 and was first launched in May 2013 by some postgraduate students at the Tshwane University of Technology with support of the Faculty of Science and the Research Office. The YAWSN targets, nursery school girls; primary school girls; high school girls; tertiary school ladies and the working class women. The focus is on wom

en as women are known to be the main care givers and initial educators to children across most if not all cultures globally. YWSN aspires to create and support various activities and programmes that promote or provides solutions to the following aspects:
• The Societal perception on the influences on women relative to men.
• The importance of women in development, as educating women implies educating the nation.
• The access to education relative to men as it has been noted that even where there is equal access, the number of women decline at higher levels (Master’s and Doctoral).
• The unemployment rate among women for the age group below 25 is two out of every three. The YWSN strongly believes that the education and development of girls can awaken and expedite the transformation of the social and economical problems of developing countries.
