Together with our lecturer, Anneli Groenewald from the Department of Journalism and Associate Professor Marcelyn Oostendorp from the Department of General Linguistics, in co-operation with Prof Kopane Ratele from the Department of Psychology, the โ€œSense of Homeโ€ workshop was facilitated, exploring how belonging is experienced in everyday life.

Dr Anell Daries guided a walking tour through an area of Stellenbosch, pointing out key sites on campus that hold historical and symbolic significance. The walk prompted reflection on how place, memory, and experience shape what it means to feel at home, or not, in a space.

The session highlighted that a sense of home is fluid, shaped through relationships, language, and lived encounters, often carrying both comfort and tension.

What can old records tell us about how societies controlled people?

At Media Monday on the 13 April, Dr Fernanda Pinto-de Almeida unpacked Cape slave registers and adverts showing enslaved people bought, sold, and traced across households, revealing fractured families and lives recorded as property.

Dr Karl Bergemann examined runaway notices and desertion reports, from soldiers to sailors to fugitives, showing how colonial authorities tracked movement and tried to control escape.

Dr Justin Pearce took us into Angolaโ€™s 1974โ€“75 turning point, where decolonisation and political rivalry between the MPLA, FNLA, and UNITA reshaped everyday life and pushed civilians into conflict lines.

If archives are fragments, what stories do they hide, and which do they reveal?
