“Universities do not end at graduation. They continue through our alumni.”

This reflection by Prof. Deresh Ramjugernath at last night's alumni engagement in Munich captured the enduring role of the Global Matie Network in shaping the future of Stellenbosch University and society.

As part of a broader conversation on the future of higher education in Africa, the evening highlighted how alumni continue to strengthen the University through mentorship, collaboration, advocacy, philanthropy and leadership. Together, they help extend Stellenbosch University's impact far beyond our campus, advancing knowledge and creating meaningful change across the world.

The global Maties network continues to expand

The launch of our 55th alumni chapter in Eindhoven, in partnership with i-Sprout and our second chapter in the Netherlands – marks a significant milestone in the growth of our global network.

These chapters create opportunities for connection and collaboration while fostering a sense of belonging in alumni’s new home away from home. They serve as a reminder that no matter where you are in the world, one truth remains: Once a Matie, always a Matie.

Die wêreldwye Matie-netwerk bly groei

Die bekendstelling van ons 55ste alumnitak in Eindhoven, in vennootskap met i-Sprout en ons tweede tak in Nederland – was ’n betekenisvolle mylpaal in die groei van ons wêreldwye Matie-netwerk.

Hierdie takke bevorder betekenisvolle verbindings en samewerking, en help om ’n gevoel van tuiste vir alumni in hul nuwe omgewings wêreldwyd te skep. Dit beklemtoon dat, ongeag waar jy jou bevind, een waarheid bly staan: Eers ’n Matie, altyd ’n Matie.

This week, Maties hosted two alumni gatherings in Switzerland, including a memorable evening in Geneva with Prof. Thuli Madonsela and an engaging evening in Zurich.

Each alumni gathering is a reminder that the Maties community spans far beyond graduation, bringing together people whose diverse experiences across industries, disciplines and borders, continue to enrich one another.

One inspiring conversation came from alumna, Shannon Derman, currently completing her PhD at the University of Zurich. She highlighted a generous, fully funded doctoral bursary under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks programme available to South Africans, which covers full tuition and provides a market-related stipend. Insights like this illustrates how networks help identify and open up opportunities that might otherwise remain unknown.

Shannon’s story is a powerful reminder that alumni networks do more than reconnect old friends. They open doors, create opportunities and connect people with possibilities they may never have discovered otherwise.

Maties in Switserland het hierdie week twee alumni byeenkomste gehou, insluitend ‘n besondere aand in Genève met prof. Thuli Madonsela en ‘n boeiende aand in Zürich.

Elke alumni-byeenkoms wys dat die Matie-gemeenskap ná graduering voortleef en mense van verskillende plekke en velde saambring om mekaar te ondersteun.

Een inspirerende voorbeeld was alumna Shannon Derman, wat tans haar PhD aan die Universiteit van Zürich voltooi. Meet Reshard Kolabhai, a doctoral candidate at Yale Law School and Stellenbosch University (SU) alumnus.

Originally from Johannesburg, Reshard began his studies in music before discovering his calling in law. After completing his LLB and LLM at SU, he lectured Constitutional and Human Rights Law before continuing his studies in the United States. His journey has been shaped by curiosity, a willingness to embrace new environments and a belief in the value of learning across different contexts.

For his Youth Month feature, Reshard encourages current students and recent graduates to: “Do a little bit of something new every day. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Look past the easy answers and focus on the hard questions.”

Ontmoet Reshard Kolabhai, ’n alumnus van die Universiteit Stellenbosch en doktorale kandidaat aan die Yale-regskool.

Reshard, oorspronklik van Johannesburg, het sy akademiese reis met musiek begin voordat voordat hy besluit het om regte te doen. Hy het sy LLB en LLM aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch voltooi en daarna Grondwetlike Reg en Menseregte aangebied. Daarna het hy verder in die Verenigde State gaan studeer. Sy pad wys dat dit help om nuuskierig te wees, nuwe dinge te probeer en soms uit jou gemaksone te beweeg.

Sy raad aan huidige studente en jong gegradueerdes is eenvoudig:

“Doen elke dag iets nuuts. Dwing jouself buite jou gemaksone. Kyk verby die maklike antwoorde, en fokus op die moeilike vrae”

Meet Fama Jallow, an aerospace engineer, climate-tech entrepreneur, astronaut candidate and Stellenbosch University alumna.

As Gambia’s first licensed female drone pilot and first astronaut candidate, Fama is using technology to address real-world challenges across Africa. After completing her Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at Stellenbosch University, she co-founded Hisia Space, a climate-tech and geospatial intelligence company using satellite data, AI and Earth observation to improve access to environmental information across the continent.

Her work is driven by a belief that space technologies can help build more resilient and informed societies, particularly in vulnerable communities.

“The world needs more people building with empathy, purpose and diverse lived experiences,” she says.

As Gambië se eerste gelisensieerde vroulike hommeltuigvlieënier en eerste ruimtevaarder-kandidaat, gebruik Fama tegnologie om werklike uitdagings regoor Afrika aan te pak. Ná haar meestersgraad in Meganiese Ingenieurswese aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch, het sy Hisia Space medestig – ’n klimaattegnologie- en georuimtelike intelligensiemaatskappy wat satellietdata, KI en aardwaarneming gebruik om toegang tot omgewingsinligting regoor die vasteland te verbeter.

Haar werk word gedryf deur die oortuiging dat ruimtetegnologieë kan help om meer veerkragtige en ingeligte gemeenskappe te bou, veral in kwesbare omgewings.

"Die wêreld het meer mense nodig wat met empatie, doelgerigtheid en diverse lewenservarings, bou." sê sy.

London visit highlights the strength of the Global Matie Network

Engaging with our London alumni chapter over two days, Prof. Deresh and Prof. Moyo connected with a global community of Maties committed to making meaningful impact across sectors and borders.

Conversations explored the role of universities in shaping future-ready graduates, strengthening research impact, and advancing innovation in response to complex global challenges – underling the value of collaboration and shared purpose within the Maties network.

Across both engagements, one message stood clear: progress is not achieved in isolation. It is built through partnership, shared knowledge, and a collective commitment to shaping what comes next.

Londen-besoek beklemtoon die krag van die wêreldwye Matie-netwerk

Prof. Ramjugernath en Prof. Moyo het onlangs vir twee dae in Londen tyd saam met ons alumnitak deurgebring en met Maties gekuier wat graag ’n verskil wil maak.

Gesprekke het gefokus op die rol van universiteite in die voorbereiding van toekomsgereed gegradueerdes, die versterking van navorsingsimpak en die bevordering van innovasie om wêreldwye uitdagings aan te pak. Dit het opnuut die waarde van samewerking en ’n gedeelde doel beklemtoon.

Die boodskap was duidelik: vooruitgang word nie alleen bereik nie. Dit word gebou deur vennootskappe, gedeelde kennis en ’n gesamentlike verbintenis om die toekoms te help vorm.

For Stellenbosch University alumnus Nash Jokomo, staying curious and open to new opportunities has shaped both his studies and his career journey.

After completing a BCom in Financial Management and Entrepreneurship and a BCom Honours in Business Management (Strategy and Innovation), Nash has worked across behavioural economics, strategy consulting and investment advisory.

Today, he works at Standard Bank Group as Lead Strategy Analyst: Partnerships and Strategic Investments & Alliances within the bank's Moonshots team, where he helps identify and shape strategic partnerships and growth opportunities.

“Careers are rarely linear anymore. Often the opportunities that shape you most are the ones you never planned for. Cast your net wide, stay curious and expose yourself to different experiences.”

Vir Nash Jokomo, ’n alumnus van die Universiteit Stellenbosch, het nuuskierigheid en ’n oop ingesteldheid teenoor nuwe geleenthede sy studies en loopbaanpad gevorm.

Nadat hy ’n BCom in Finansiële Bestuur en Entrepreneurskap en ’n BCom Hons in Besigheidsbestuur (Strategie en Innovasie) voltooi het, het Nash ervaring opgedoen in gedrags-ekonomie, strategiese konsultasie en beleggingsadvies.

Vandag werk hy by Standard Bank Groep as Hoofstrategie-ontleder vir Vennootskappe, Strategiese Beleggings en Alliansies in die bank se Moonshots-span, waar hy fokus op die identifisering en ontwikkeling van strategiese vennootskappe en nuwe groeigeleenthede.

“Loopbane volg deesdae selde ’n reguit pad. Dikwels is dit die geleenthede waarvoor jy nie beplan het nie wat jou die meeste vorm. Gooi jou net wyd, bly nuuskierig en stel jouself bloot aan verskillende ervarings.”

There’s something special about meeting fellow Maties on the other side of the world and instantly feeling at home 🇪🇸

Joined by Prof Nicola Smit, Maties from across Europe came together in Madrid for an evening of connection, conversation, and shared memories. It was a chance to share stories and celebrate the shared experiences that continue long after graduation.

No matter where life takes us, the Stellenbosch spirit continues to bring us together. Here's to friendships that span continents, a community that always feels like home, and a Global Maties Network that keeps growing stronger around the world.

Daar is iets besonders daaraan om mede-Maties aan die ander kant van die wêreld te ontmoet en steeds daardie gevoel van tuiskoms te ervaar.
