RACE REPORT ‼️‼️
The Momentum Medical Scheme Tankwa Trek presented by Biogen— 4 days, 280km, 5500m elevation
On the 5-8th of February of this year, four of our Maties cyclists had the opportunity to race the Momentum Medical Scheme presented by Biogen. A gruelling 4 day premier South African stage race. It is one of the first UCI events of the year, and it proved itself worthy of its infamous name.
Maties Slowest - (3rd year Mechanical Engineering) and (2nd year BCom Financial Management)
Our quick boys had a great 4 days on the bike but suffered an unfortunate broken rim on the Merino Monster queen stage. Despite this they fought to the end securing a superb 8th in the Amateur men (36th overall).
Maties Fastest - (2nd year BSc Sport Science) and (3rd year BCom Actuarial Science)
After a late call up for Attie the boys pulled through with an incredibly clean Tankwa trek. Almost no mechanicals and a safe ride for both team members secured them a very respectable 10th in Amateur Men (39th overall)
A special mention to our other Stellenbosch students (3rd year BSc Sport Science) who completed her first elite woman’s stage race with ._marx (BSc Mathematical Sciences) a Stellenbosch university alumni. Both earning valuable experience at the highest level.
A huge congrats to ._.duplessis (2nd year BSc Agricultural Economics) and (3rd year Mechanical Engineering) for their unbelievable 11th place in the elite category (11th overall). Two Stellenbosch students riding their socks off in a category full of professionals and showing that they belong at the sharpest end of the stick.
Finally a huge thank you to and for putting on an incredible event, and helping our students get access to such a prestigious race. As students competing in stage races is barred by the entry prices, and were kind enough to offer Maties a student discount to race, which we will be forever grateful for.
