Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Law is proud to host the International Association of Law Schools Annual Meeting and Conference from 3 to 4 September, at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS).
This prestigious event brings together over 80 delegates and global legal leaders representing more than 60 universities across 23 countries to address critical challenges in legal education, such as artificial intelligence, deglobalization, erosion, and the Rule of Law.

The opening session featured a welcome address by Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, alongside key insights from IALS leadership and a keynote address by retired South African Constitutional Court Justice Richard Goldstone.

In his address, Professor Deresh Ramjugernath highlighted the vital role of legal research – particularly in South Africa where the Rule of Law was contested under the apartheid government. His address emphasises the ongoing global need to protect human rights, dignity, equality, and access to education.

Calling on our legal recruitment partners!

The Faculty of Law is in the midst of a research project to better understand how our law students integrate into the working world, post-graduation, and the experiences of external stakeholders who work with them, including legal recruiters, candidate attorney programmes, and practitioners involved in recruiting our graduates.

If you are involved in recruiting Stellenbosch University law students, whether through vacation work, candidate attorney or pupillage programmes, internships, or graduate recruitment more broadly, we would value your perspective.

We’re inviting interested recruiters and practitioners to take part. This involves a short online questionnaire, plus an optional one-on-one online meeting with our colleagues at M&ESure, who are leading the qualitative research for this project.

If you would like to take part, please either send an email to [email protected], or send us a message on LinkedIn (https://lnkd.in/dkDc2Zrg).

Your insights will help us strengthen the way we prepare our students for legal practice.

The South African Law Deans’ Association (SALDA) is currently convening at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Law, bringing together academic leadership from across the country. SALDA acknowledges the leadership of the outgoing President and Vice-President, Prof Mzukisi Njotini (Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Fort Hare) and Prof Jacques de Ville (Dean, Faculty of Law, UWC).

At this meeting, a new leadership team was elected: Dr Lynn Biggs (Dean, Faculty of Law, Nelson Mandela University) as President and Prof Mpfariseni Budeli-Nemakonde (Dean, Faculty of Law, UNISA) as Vice-President. SALDA is committed to developing and maintaining excellence, driving transformation, and strengthening collaboration across legal research and training. Part of this mandate includes partnering with professional bodies, like the Legal Practice Council, on initiatives such as LLB reviews and curricula. The association convenes biannually, rotating its meetings across South African law faculties.

This meeting sets the stage for the general meeting and conference of the International Association of Law Schools (IALS) taking place on 3–4 September 2026 at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS). This is the first time the IALS general meeting will be taking place in South Africa.

On 13 August 2026, the Faculty of Law and its Transformation Committee hosted a panel discussion, focused on the theme of women and access to basic services, to commemorate Women’s Day.

The panel discussion was organised and chaired by Dr Coline Bruintjies from the Department of Public Law. The panel was further made up of three phenomenal women: Danel Adams - candidate legal practitioner at the Stellenbosch University law clinic; Tendai Mafuma - senior legal researcher at Section 27; and, Thobeka Gumede - attorney at the Centre for Environmental Rights.

The panellists shared diverse experiences of their work related to the day’s theme.

Thobeka Gumede called attention to how women are disproportionately affected by these rights violations. Danel Adams engaged with women’s challenges related to access to justice and how lack of resources can make rights realisation difficult. Finally, Tendai Mafuma put the spotlight on access to health care and the failures in the public health system that put women and children at risk.
