In this episode of the Legal Resources Radio's series on s*xual corruption, Claire Rankin and Muyenga Mugerwa-Sekawabe sit down with Professor Sope Williams, a professor at Stellenbosch University and Deputy Director of the African Procurement Law Unit. Prof Williams is a leading anti-corruption expert and has produced extensive research focused on s*xual corruption. Claire, Muyenga and Prof Williams delve deep into the legal landscape surrounding s*xual corruption; and explore the gaps in the current legislative framework - which see perpetrators go unpunished and place victims themselves at significant risk of criminalisation.

Gender-based violence remains a serious challenge in Papua New Guinea, where over 1.5 million people experience it each year.

A team of researchers, including criminologist ๐˜ฟ๐™ง ๐™‚๐™ช๐™ฎ ๐™‡๐™–๐™ข๐™— of Stellenbosch University, believes sport could offer a way to break the cycle of violence.

Organised activities like rugby and volleyball are creating โ€œcultures of hope,โ€ shifting behaviours, and offering communities safer, positive alternatives.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ THE BILL OF RIGHTS AT 30: INTERSECTIONAL JUSTICE

Are the promises of our Bill of Rights reaching the women who keep South Africaโ€™s wheels turning, or is the legal system still failing those it claims to protect?

If you want to know how the Women's Legal Centre is dismantling the colonial and patriarchal legacies that still police womenโ€™s bodies and livelihoods, this episode is a must-listen.

The latest episode of our Human Rights Month series is officially OUT NOW.

Brendt Wayne DeWet sits down with Charlene May, Director of the Womenโ€™s Legal Centre, to discuss the intersection of race, class, and gender in our justice system.

In this episode, we discuss:

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ The value of unpaid care: Why the childcare and subsistence farming that keep our society running remain invisible on bank statements.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ The "messy" reality of cohabitation: Why legal recognition for partners living together without a marriage certificate is a vital human rights "must-have."

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Landmark victories: Reflecting on the historic Constitutional Court win for Muslim marriages and the ongoing fight for rights recognition.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Healing the scars of slavery: How the Mahlangu judgment for domestic workersโ€™ rights addresses centuries of systemic exclusion.

๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Decriminalising s*x work: A discussion on why the state must stop policing the bodies of consenting adults and respect bodily autonomy.

๐Ÿšจ HUMAN RIGHTS MONTH AT MFM 92.6:

๐Ÿšจ ADVOCATE FOR EQUALITY:

Dismantling historic disadvantage starts with acknowledging that discrimination is still present in our everyday lives. Learn how you can support the push for laws that reflect the lived realities of all women.

First webinar of 2026: Gender inequality and care work

Last yearโ€™s webinar series was very successful, so weโ€™re doing another round!

Women perform over 75% of unpaid care work globally. This unequal distribution perpetuates gender stereotypes, hinders girlsโ€™ and womenโ€™s empowerment and contributes to economic and social inequalities.

Weโ€™re excited to be joined by partners who specialise in various related areas - check back in two days for more info.

Digital gender-based violence is a crime!

The internet is a gateway for many of us to access information, empower and express ourselves. But for many of us these same spaces are unsafe.

The scourge of digital gender-based violence threatens the safety and well-being of especially women and children in the Western Cape.

Tune in this afternoon at 15H30, on the Lift Club with Sibu, as we discuss what digital gender-based violence is, how it affects those who experience it and what to do if it happens to you.

Joining us is Advocate Gerda Marx from the National Prosecuting Authority and Mr. Abdul Ryklief from the Department of Social Development.

To find out more about what digital gender-based violence is and how you can get help go to https://www.westerncape.gov.za/social-development/16-days-activism-no-violence-against-women-and-children or call the DSD tollfree number on 0800 220 250.

Persons with disabilities experiencing gender-based violence need support.

Persons with disabilities, particularly women and children, face a higher risk of experiencing gender-based violence. People are often abused by those who are entrusted with their care and people that they know.

Tune in this afternoon at 15H30, on the Lift Club with Sibu, as we discuss how persons with disabilities can access help and what we as community members can do if we know someone who is experiencing gender-based violence.

Joining us is Kerryn Rheese from MOSAIC to share key information and practical advice.

If you see something say something.

Everyone has the right to safety.

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community are susceptible to various forms of gender-based violence due to a variety of reasons. Many are rejected by their loved ones and the communities which they live in. This leaves them isolated and susceptible to further harm.

Tune in this afternoon, at 3:30pm, on the Lift Club with Sibu, as we speak with Zola, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and gender-based violence survivor, as well as Sharon Cox from the Triangle project to discuss the help available and practical steps that survivors of gender-based violence can take to help keep them safe.

If you or someone you know from the LGBTQIA+ community are experiencing gender-based violence access more information or help go to https://www.westerncape.gov.za/social-development/16-days-activism-no-violence-against-women-and-children or call the DSD tollfree number on 0800 220 250.
