Preparing future engineers means developing more than technical expertise.

First-year students concluded their ICC113 module with a conference-style poster and simulated investment activity, creating an authentic and engaging learning experience.

Working in teams, they explored real-world engineering linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (hashtag ) and presented their findings to invited guests who acted as investors.

The conference took place in Cape Town from 13–15 May 2026 and was hosted by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

This prestigious IEOM Society International award recognises Prof. van Eeden’s outstanding contributions, professional leadership, and dedicated service to the fields of Industrial Engineering, Logistics, and Supply Chain Systems.

Our first-year engineering students are bringing their Intercultural Communication projects to life - tackling real-world challenges linked to the Sustainable Development Goals.

But this isn’t just a poster session. The room becomes an interactive space where students pitch their ideas to “investors”, explain the problems they’re addressing, who it impacts, and defend their thinking through real conversations and questions.

It’s a powerful, hands-on experience that builds communication, confidence, and global awareness. Let’s give them a well-deserved round of applause 👏

Developed by Camryn Abrahamson in her final year (now a Master’s student), under the supervision of Prof Herman Kamper, this Mechatronic Engineering project uses speech technology to explore how young children develop early maths skills through play.
