An important message on nutrition and our gut microbiome, especially when it comes to our children, from Prof Thulani Makhalanyane and Prof. Ronelle Burger in The Conversation Africa today. Central message: "... putting calories into mouths is not enough to prevent stunting in children. The science points to the role played by our intestinal microbiome – the trillions of microscopic organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, that live in and on us – and the inability to digest nutrients."

One last story!
With a freshly printed PhD certificate from Stellenbosch University in his pocket, Dr Amos Kiyumbi is on a mission to invest all the research experience he has gained from studying in Germany and South Africa since 2015 into the establishment of a photonics initiative in Tanzania.
Their goals include research, advancing energy and communication solutions, and developing affordable optical tools for healthcare, such as the malaria biosensor he developed for his doctoral studies under Prof. Mark Tame at SU’s Department of Physics.

Proud of the 12 PhDs in Physics conferred during Stellenbosch University's March graduation ceremony yesterday! And six of these were awarded to women physicists!
From Prof Shaun Wyngaardt, Head of the Department of Physics: "This achievement reflects not only academic excellence, but also the resilience, dedication, and intellectual curiosity that define the next generation of scientific leaders.
“Each of these graduates has contributed original knowledge to the field of physics—advancing understanding in areas that have the potential to shape technology, society, and our view of the universe. Completing a PhD is no small feat; it demands years of perseverance, critical thinking, and an unwavering commitment to discovery.
“Today, we proudly congratulate each of these scholars on their accomplishment,” he concluded.
