This past weekend, our newly elected student leaders came together for MatiesLead- a weekend of knowing, growing, and leading together.

From keynote conversations with 𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒊 𝑲𝒘𝒆𝒌𝒘𝒆𝒛𝒂 and 𝑲𝒉𝒖𝒍𝒆 𝑫𝒖𝒎𝒂 to sessions on emotional intelligence, governance, finance, and civic engagement, our leaders sharpened the skills they’ll take into their residences, societies, and communities.🫂

The weekend closed with “Where Democracy Lives”, a TEDxStellenbosch Salon exploring how democracy is lived every day - right here on campus.

Stellenbosch University congratulates Prof Tulio de Oliveira, Prof Jonathan Jansen, Prof Bert Klumperman and Prof Frank Tanser, on their latest recognition by the The National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF), celebrating excellence and impact across diverse fields of research.
🎖Prof Tulio de Oliveira received the NRF Societal Impact Award for his genomics research, including work that identified the Beta and Omicron variants and contributed to South Africa and the global response to COVID-19.
🎖Prof Jonathan Jansen received the NRF Lifetime Achievement Award for his extraordinary contribution to the advancement of science in and for South Africa. His influential work in curriculum theory has shaped thinking around education, access and institutional culture.
🎖Prof Bert Klumperman received his fourth consecutive NRF A-rating, recognising sustained research excellence in polymer chemistry, including work exploring applications in drug discovery and contraceptive development.
🎖Prof Frank Tanser, NRF Societal Impact Award (Finalist), recognising his contributions to HIV epidemiology, population health and data-driven research.

[READ] FISU Women’s Rugby Sevens day 1 sees Canada, France and Japan set the pace.

The opening day of the women’s competition at the 2026 FISU World University Championship Rugby Sevens saw Canada, France and Japan emerge as the early pace-setters, with Canada unbeaten after two comprehensive victories and defending champions Japan and France both securing six points in Pool A. Australia showcased their attacking strength with an 89-0 win over Botswana despite a narrow defeat to Ireland, while hosts South Africa faced tough challenges against France and Japan, with Siyonela Macamba’s outstanding solo try providing one of the day’s highlights.
