From graduate readiness and multilingualism to well-being and artificial intelligence, SU’s inaugural 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈-𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈-𝑨𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑫𝒂𝒚 brought together academics, industry partners, and higher education specialists to tackle one of the most pressing questions facing universities today: what remains distinctly human in learning?

As conversations continue in the lead-up to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Conference in November, colleagues explored how higher education can prepare students not only for the future of work but also for citizenship, leadership, and meaningful participation in society.🫂

This morning’s Business Breakfast in Johannesburg brought together bursary partners, Stellenbosch University leadership, and alumni to reflect on the transformative power of higher education and the partnerships that make it possible.🫂

Among those in attendance were young professionals now thriving in Gauteng thanks to bursary support they received during their studies. Their stories are a reminder that the student journey is not always straightforward and that success requires more than financial assistance alone. Yet when the right support is in place, the impact is profound.

Every bursary represents more than an opportunity to study; it is an investment in potential, dignity, and lasting change.

Today is World Bicycle Day 🚲 and at Stellenbosch University, bikes mean more than just getting to your 8am lecture.

The Matie Bikes programme gives student and staff access to rentable bicycles, secure bike sheds across campus, and dedicated cycling route, making it easier (and greener) to get around. But the story doesn’t end there.

When these bikes are decommissioned, they don’t disappear. Through Operation Matie Bikes, over 150 bicycles were donated to rural communities in the Western Cape, places where access to transport directly affects access to education and healthcare.

A major archive documenting one of South Africa’s 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 yet often overlooked liberation traditions has found a home at Stellenbosch University.

The newly launched Unity Movement Collection brings together more than 80 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚, preserving rare documents, photographs, correspondence and publications linked to the Non-European Unity Movement (NEUM), the New Unity Movement (NUM) and affiliated organisations.💡

As we continue to expand and diversify our Special Collections, archives such as these play an important role in ensuring that history reflects the many voices that shaped it.🗣️

‘𝗔 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝘁’: 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

How do we remake the world 600 years after it was “broken in half” by the enslavement of black Africans?

As the global debate about reparations gathers momentum, historian and author Dr Panashe Chigumadzi used her Africa Day lecture at Stellenbosch University to call for radical justice.
Addressing a packed audience at the SU Museum and viewers online, she offered a critical reappraisal of ubuntu and Africa’s place in the world.
Chigumadzi argued that the legacy of slavery, colonialism and apartheid will endure until the debt is paid. “A crime does not rot,” she said, invoking a principle in African legal and moral traditions.

The event reflected Stellenbosch University’s commitment to rigorous reflection, courageous conversations and thought leadership on issues shaping Africa and the world at large.
