More Than a Day: Living the Spirit of World Environment Day

Dr Catherine Dzerefos
Lecturer: Department of Environmental, Water and Earth Sciences

Take a moment to walk, breathe, and appreciate the natural world around you.

Many of us are fortunate to have inherited a totem from the natural world – a symbolic reminder that we are connected to the environment, not separate from it. In the same way, World Environment Day, celebrated annually on 5 June, is far more than a symbolic date on the calendar. It is a reminder that our health, wellbeing, and future depend on the ecosystems that sustain us.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil that produces our food, and the biodiversity that supports life are all interconnected. Protecting the environment is therefore not only a global responsibility but also a personal one. World Environment Day challenges each of us to reflect on our relationship with nature and to take meaningful action, however small, towards a more sustainable future.

By appreciating and caring for the natural world every day, we honour the spirit of World Environment Day and help ensure a healthier planet for future generations.

The Faculty of Science proudly congratulates two of its distinguished academics, Professor Alvaro Viljoen and Professor Ray Jansen, on being shortlisted as finalists in the prestigious 2025/2026 NSTF-South32 Awards, widely recognised as the “Science Oscars of South Africa.”

Finalists are selected through a rigorous adjudication process conducted by an independent panel of experts and represent individuals who have made significantly outstanding contributions to science, engineering, technology and innovation in the country.

Professor Viljoen has been shortlisted in the Lifetime Award category, one of the highest honours presented by the NSTF. The award recognises individuals whose careers have demonstrated sustained excellence and exceptional impact in advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.

Professor Jansen has been shortlisted in the Communication Award category, which recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to science communication and public engagement.

The finalists will be honoured, and the winners announced, at the prestigious NSTF-South32 Awards Gala Event on 16 July 2026.
The Faculty wishes both professors every success for the final stage of the competition and congratulates them on this remarkable achievement. Their recognition on a national platform reinforces the important role that TUT researchers play in advancing scientific excellence, driving innovation and creating meaningful impact in South Africa and beyond.
