More Than a Day: Living the Spirit of World Environment Day
Dr Catherine Dzerefos
Lecturer: Department of Environmental, Water and Earth Sciences
Take a moment to walk, breathe, and appreciate the natural world around you.
Many of us are fortunate to have inherited a totem from the natural world – a symbolic reminder that we are connected to the environment, not separate from it. In the same way, World Environment Day, celebrated annually on 5 June, is far more than a symbolic date on the calendar. It is a reminder that our health, wellbeing, and future depend on the ecosystems that sustain us.
The air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil that produces our food, and the biodiversity that supports life are all interconnected. Protecting the environment is therefore not only a global responsibility but also a personal one. World Environment Day challenges each of us to reflect on our relationship with nature and to take meaningful action, however small, towards a more sustainable future.
By appreciating and caring for the natural world every day, we honour the spirit of World Environment Day and help ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
