Congratulations to Dr Elinda de Klerk

Hugenote Kollege proudly congratulates Dr Elinda de Klerk, Psychology Lecturer at Hugenote Kollege, on the completion of her PhD in Psychology at the North-West University.

Dr De Klerk’s doctoral research, titled Understanding three common mental disorders during the legal proceedings of female r**e victims in South Africa, makes an important contribution to the fields of psychology, trauma-informed practice, and victim-centred justice.

Her work explores how Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder are experienced by female r**e victims as they move through the legal process in South Africa. Through this research, Dr De Klerk brings together the worlds of psychology and law, offering practical, trauma-informed guidelines for mental health professionals, legal practitioners, and institutions.

This is scholarship with both academic depth and human compassion. It reminds us that justice must be more than a legal process; it must also honour dignity, healing, and care.

We are proud to have Dr De Klerk as part of the Hugenote Kollege academic community and celebrate this significant achievement with her.

Congratulations, Dr De Klerk. Your work bears witness to courage, compassion, and the pursuit of justice.

Yesterday marked the last day in the classroom for our 4th-year social work students. Through their presentations, they showcased the diverse community work projects they implemented during the first semester. These included drug awareness campaigns at high schools, wellness and resilience activities for staff at a facility for persons with intellectual disabilities, educational sessions at a child and youth care centre, and wellness and educational initiatives with students and staff at Hugenote Kollege.

Their presentations reflected growth, professionalism, creativity, and commitment to social justice and community wellbeing. It was inspiring to see how they applied community work theories and practice models to address real community needs.

They have demonstrated that they are ready for their final practical placement, and we are incredibly proud of all they have achieved. We look forward to seeing the impact they will continue to make as future social workers.

Our Fourth Year students reached a meaningful milestone today as they attended their very last lab session before embarking on their block practical placements at various welfare organisations on 13 July 2026.

To mark this important transition from classroom learning to field practice, we had the privilege of sending them off with a lecture by Professor Lambert Engelbrecht on _Essential Professional Characteristics_, with a special emphasis on presence. The message was both inspiring and fitting as our students prepare to step into professional spaces where authenticity, compassion, self-awareness, and meaningful engagement are essential.

It was also a nostalgic moment for Prof Engelbrecht, who shared that he was presenting this lecture in the very same hall where he sat as a first-year Social Work student at Hugenote Kollege in 1982. It truly was a full circle moment, a powerful reminder of how journeys in the social work profession continue to inspire future generations of social workers.

As our students begin this next chapter of their journey, we trust that they will carry with them the knowledge, values, and skills they have developed throughout their studies. We are proud of each student and excited to see the impact they will make in the communities and organisations they will serve.

Wishing our students all the best as they enter field practice. May this be a season of growth, learning, and transformation. Go make us proud!

Experiential learning is such an important part of social work education. Today, our 3rd and 4th year students participated in an awareness session focused on creating safe and inclusive spaces for vulnerable populations. Through meaningful discussions and shared experiences, students were encouraged to reflect critically on empathy, respect, and social justice in practice.

A sincere thank you to our guest speakers, Jami Zulu and Zenobia Meyer, for sharing your insights, experiences, and voices so openly with our students. Your contributions added immense value to the learning experience and inspired important conversations for future social work practice.
