Master’s Degree for Chartered Accountant and School of Commerce Academic 🎓

Auditing lecturer, Mr Lungani Gcwensa CA(SA), has graduated with a Master of Accountancy degree after exploring the intersection of financial performance and sustainability in corporate practice.

His study, titled: ‘South African Firms’ Attitude to Carbon Emissions and Corporate Financial Performance’, contributes to the growing field of sustainability accounting in South Africa, focusing on JSE-listed industrial, metal, and mining companies.

Supervised by Professor Mabutho Sibanda, the research examines the relationship between environmental performance and financial outcomes, offering valuable insights into how sustainability practices influence both accounting results and market valuation.

Beyond academia, the study underscores the importance of corporate environmental responsibility, particularly for communities affected by mining and industrial activity, while advancing long-term sustainability thinking.

We celebrate Mr Gcwensa’s achievement and his contribution to knowledge at the intersection of accounting, sustainability, and corporate governance.

Chief Harbour Master at Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), Captain Rufus Lekala graduated with a Master of Commerce in Maritime Studies degree after returning to the University of KwaZulu-Natal UKZN) after four years.
Lekala’s career began from humble beginnings as a taxi driver in Mamelodi, Pretoria. He later joined Transnet, serving as a Tug Master in the Port of Cape Town before becoming a Marine Pilot in the Port of Saldanha Bay.
Lekala’s dissertation, titled: ‘Assessing the Impact of Increased Container Vessel Size for Durban Container Terminal’, was supervised by UKZN maritime economist, Dr Sanele Gumede, and maritime industry expert, Dr Siphiwe Mthembu.
His research is especially timely as the Port of Durban was recently ranked among the lowest-performing ports in the international Container Port Performance Index, despite being the busiest container port in the southern hemisphere. The study examined whether the port’s infrastructure, equipment and operational systems are adequately prepared to efficiently handle larger vessels.
The research revealed that while the Durban Container Terminal has made progress in accommodating larger ships, challenges remain in berth productivity, yard capacity, equipment availability and landside coordination. The study recommends targeted infrastructure upgrades, improved planning and scheduling systems, enhanced collaboration among port stakeholders and continued investment in skills development to ensure the terminal remains competitive and resilient.
Lekala’s passion for Maritime Studies is driven by the critical role the maritime sector plays in growing South Africa’s economy, trade and regional integration.

Halala Captain Lekala, continue inspiring Greatness!

“As a woman living with a disability, I am driven by the need to challenge limitations and break barriers,” said Ms Nandipha Sothiya (39), who is blind and graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management.

Her achievement that also shines a light on the structural barriers that students with disabilities continue to face in accessing Higher Education.

Born blind, Sothiya completed the qualification while working as an educator and raising three young children aged ten, seven and four. She situates her achievement within a broader call for institutions and workplaces to do more to create the conditions in which persons with disabilities can thrive.

“I wanted to prove to myself, my children and others in similar situations that it is possible to achieve goals regardless of challenges faced. Completing this qualification gave me a renewed sense of confidence and self-belief.”
Halala Ms Sothiya! Continue to inspire Greatness!

South African politician and current Chairperson of the Finance Portfolio Committee in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Dr Andiswa Mosai graduated with a PhD in Management.
Mosai’s thesis, titled: ‘Enhancing Effective Corporate Governance in Local Government: A Case of Sedibeng District, Gauteng Province, South Africa’, was supervised by Public Governance expert Professor Purshottama Reddy and Management specialist Professor Emmanuel Mutambara.
Mosai’s study explored ways to strengthen corporate governance within South Africa’s local government sphere, using the Sedibeng District Municipality as a case study.
The findings revealed a disconnect between governance policies and their actual implementation as well as political interference in administrative processes, which undermines decision-making and accountability. The study also identified ineffective performance management systems, inadequate skills and institutional capacity, lack of ethical leadership, financial mismanagement, and poor planning as major contributors to service delivery backlogs and weak municipal performance.

For UKZN Master of Laws (LLM) in Business Law cm laude graduate Ms Owethu Ngcobo, the journey to academic success was fuelled by resilience, discipline, and the unwavering support of her mother. 💫

Despite the demanding nature of a research-intensive degree, Ngcobo remained focused on her goals, even during moments of doubt and exhaustion. She credits her mother’s encouragement, prayers, and constant belief in her as the motivation that carried her through the most difficult stages of her studies.

Supervised by Dr Clydenia Stevens, her research titled: ‘Exploring Opportunities and Challenges: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Trade Relations between South Africa and the United States’, examined the impact of global trade relations and the importance of diversifying South Africa’s economic partnerships for long-term stability.

A Week of Wins for UKZN Law Summa Cum Laude Graduate

In a moment that captured the true spirit of excellence at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Ms Shamenthree Naik celebrated an extraordinary milestone even before stepping onto the Graduation stage to receive her LLB summa cm laude.

Just a week ahead of her graduation, Naik scooped an impressive number of Law student awards - which she terms as a powerful reflection of her dedication, discipline and commitment to her studies.

Her list of achievements is highly impressive. Naik received top prizes in Administrative Law, Corporate Law, Civil Procedure, Insurance and Agency, Clinical Law, and Mooting. She was also recognised as Best Fourth-Year Student and Top LLB Student and awarded the prestigious Phatshoane Henney Group Honour Medal for achieving an overall average above 80%.

But behind these achievements is a story that goes far beyond academic success.

Naik balanced her studies with her responsibilities as a mother, wife and daughter - a journey that required immense sacrifice and strength. There were long nights, competing priorities and moments of exhaustion, but she remained focused on her goal and driven by purpose.

Her passion for justice is not only academic, but also deeply personal. During her time at university, she volunteered at a local orphanage, giving her time and care to children in need. This commitment reflects her belief that the law should serve people, especially those who are most vulnerable.

“I want my degree, and every qualification after this, to be used in a meaningful way wherever I may find myself,” she says.

For Naik, the law is not just a career, it is a responsibility grounded in integrity. “Having a Law degree means nothing if you don’t have honesty and strong values. You must live it, not just practise it,” she explains.

Congratulations Shamenthree!

Following in her Father’s Footsteps: Ms Owethu Mthethwa has achieved a distinction in her LLB at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), following a career path inspired by her father, a court magistrate.

Growing up immersed in the values of fairness and justice, she developed a deep passion for using the law as a tool for meaningful social change.

“Graduating summa cm laude means the prayers of my ancestors are being fulfilled,” said Mthethwa. “It’s the result of years of dedication, discipline and perseverance,” she reflects. Even during moments of self-doubt, especially in demanding exam seasons, Mthethwa remained anchored in her purpose. “Whenever I felt like giving up, I reminded myself why I started.”

Mthethwa’s commitment to excellence has been widely recognised. At UKZN, she scooped the Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Prize for Best 4th Year Student, the Abel Torf Prize for Best Overall LLB Student, the Bowmans Attorneys Prize for Best Overall LLB Student, and the Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr Prize for Best Overall LLB Student. She also received the Phatshoane Henney Group Honour Medal, awarded to students who achieve an aggregate of 80% and above.

Beyond academics, she distinguished herself as a student leader, serving on the SRC Disciplinary Committee, as Acting Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the UKZN Law Review, a class representative, and a tutor to first-year LLB students. She is particularly passionate about bioethics and improving South Africa’s legal system, especially addressing court backlogs to ensure timely access to justice.

Her advice to aspiring Law students is simple but powerful: “Stay consistent, ask for help, and remember your purpose. Success is not just about grades, it’s about growth, balance, and making a difference.”

Owethu’s journey is an inspiring reminder of what is possible when passion meets discipline.
