DAOCs Vs Warfarin
DAOCs, or Direct Oral Anticoagulants, are the preferred option over warfarin for most people who need blood thinners to prevent blood clots. Here's why
1. Reduced bleeding risk:
✅️Warfarin interacts with many foods and medications, making it difficult to maintain a stable blood-thinning effect. This can lead to an increased risk of both major and minor bleeding events.
✅️DAOCs, on the other hand, have more predictable effects and a lower risk of bleeding, especially serious bleeding in the brain.
2. No need for frequent monitoring:
✅️Warfarin requires regular blood tests (usually weekly) to monitor its effectiveness and adjust the dosage. This can be inconvenient and time-consuming for patients.
✅️DAOCs generally do not require routine blood tests, making them a more convenient option for many patients.
3. Faster onset and offset of action:
✅️Warfarin can take several days to reach its full effect and can also linger in the body for several days after stopping the medication. This can make it more difficult to manage bleeding risks around surgery or other procedures.
✅️DAOCs start working quickly and also wear off more quickly, making them easier to manage in these situations.
4. Similar effectiveness in preventing blood clots:
✅️Numerous studies have shown that DAOCs are just as effective as warfarin in preventing blood clots in most conditions, such as atrial fibrillation and deep vein thrombosis.
5. Easier to take:
DAOCs are typically taken once or twice a day, while warfarin may need to be taken multiple times a day. This can make DAOCs a more convenient option for some patients.
DISCLAIMER: It is important to note that DAOCs are not right for everyone. Some people may still be prescribed warfarin if they have certain medical conditions or are taking other medications that interact with DAOCs.
