Bridging Academics, Regulation, and Industry: NUST Faculty of Engineering Hosts Historic ECZ & ZIE CEO Engagement

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Faculty of Engineering recently became the epicentre of engineering excellence in the region as it proudly hosted the high-profile Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ) and Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) CEO Engagement with the Matabeleland Area Chapter!

The landmark event drew hundreds of eager engineering students, seasoned industry professionals, and key stakeholders from across the region, filling the venue to capacity and signalling a vibrant future for the engineering ecosystem in Matabeleland.

Opening the proceedings with a warm institutional welcome and an insightful academic overview was NUST's very own Executive Dean of Engineering, Dr B. Mtunzi. He highlighted NUST’s unwavering commitment to producing innovative, industry-ready engineers capable of solving real-world challenges.

Following the welcome, Eng. B. Ndlovu delivered the Matabeleland Chapter Address, unpacking ongoing regional initiatives and addressing current infrastructural and industrial challenges within the Matabeleland area. The ZIE Student Chapter Representative then took the podium, energetically presenting current student-led activities, career expectations, and the vital support required from the professional community to bridge the transition from lecture rooms to heavy industry.

Attendees were treated to powerhouse keynote presentations from the apex of engineering leadership in Zimbabwe. Dr Eng. S. Diarra (CEO, Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers) shared an inspiring roadmap for ZIE, highlighting national strategic goals, upcoming professional development initiatives, and the crucial role local engineers must play in spearheading national industrialisation and development. This was complemented by Dr Eng. B. Rafemoyo (CEO, Engineering Council of Zimbabwe), who delivered an essential masterclass on professional compliance, ethical practice, legal frameworks, and the absolute necessity of registration with the council to preserve safety and global engineering standards.

The highlight of the evening was the wide-open Interactive Q&A and Panel Discussion. The floor was handed over to the hundreds of students and practising engineers in attendance. A robust, transparent, and exciting dialogue ensued, with the CEOs addressing burning questions regarding professional graduate traineeships, professional mentoring, standardisations, and direct opportunities for local engineering talent.

The successful evening wrapped up with an official Vote of Thanks from the ZIE Matabeleland Chapter leadership. Attendees then moved into an energetic networking session over refreshments, sharing ideas and building valuable professional connections.

A huge thank you to the ECZ and ZIE leadership teams, our dedicated Faculty of Engineering, and the phenomenal crowd of professionals and students who made this engagement an absolute success! Together, we are engineering a bolder, brighter, and more resilient future!
