গত ১ অক্টোবর বিআইজিডির মাঠকেন্দ্রের তৃতীয় প্রতিষ্ঠাবার্ষিকী উপলক্ষে আয়োজিত হয় মাঠকেন্দ্র সংযোগ ২০২৬। অনুষ্ঠানে মাঠপর্যায়ে বিশেষ অবদানের জন্য ১০ জন তথ্য সংগ্রহকারীকে সম্মাননা প্রদান করা হয় রকি অ্যাওয়ার্ড ফর এক্সিলেন্স ইন ফিল্ডওয়ার্ক-এর মাধ্যমে। পাশাপাশি, একটি উন্মুক্ত আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়ে গবেষক ও স্থানীয় কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা নিজেদের অভিজ্ঞতা ও দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি তুলে ধরেন।

On 19 October 2026, BGMEA launched its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Dashboard at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka. The platform supports ESG reporting and performance tracking in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector, helping factories become more compliant and data-driven as global market requirements evolve.

The dashboard is a collaborative effort between BGMEA, BIGD, Mapped in Bangladesh (MiB), and the Embassy of Denmark in Bangladesh. BIGD served as the primary research and technical partner, while MiB, an initiative of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development - CED, BRAC University, developed and maintains the technical platform with financial support from the Embassy of Denmark.

The event also marked the closing of BIGD’s “Capacity Building of Factories in Sustainability and Climate Action” project, through which BIGD researchers assessed energy use and efficiency across 385 RMG factories to identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency and increasing renewable energy adoption in the sector.

How can migration become a more equitable response to climate change?

At বিআইজিডি গবেষণার খোঁজখবর on 11 October 2026, Marianna Hu, PhD Researcher at the European University Institute (EUI), presented her research, “A Climate Adaptation Framework for Climate-Related Mobility.”

The research examines how international climate law and existing policy frameworks shape migration as a response to climate change. Focusing on Bangladesh, it explores how migration is incorporated into local adaptation policies and how communities navigate existing systems of mobility. The study also considers how a justice-oriented approach to climate-related mobility can better reflect principles of equity and shared responsibility.

On 13 October, BIGD and Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) convened “Women, Power, and Political Orders in Muslim Society Contexts,” bringing together scholars, activists, lawmakers, and legal practitioners from seven countries to discuss women’s political leadership and influence during periods of political transition.

Across three sessions, the convening explored women’s roles in political movements, transitional justice, constitutional design, and the institutionalization of women’s rights. Drawing on experiences from different national contexts, discussions examined why women’s contributions to movements for democracy and justice often fail to translate into lasting political power, and what strategies and institutional frameworks are needed to ensure their meaningful participation in shaping emerging political orders.

Our Executive Director, Dr. Imran Matin, gave a trigger presentation at “Emerging Poverty and Social Inclusion Challenges: From Evidence to Policies and Programmes,” a side event of the Asian Development Bank's Asia Pacific Social Protection (APSP) Week.

In the session on the poverty-precarity continuum, he presented “Damaging Fluctuations and Vulnerable Escapes: Evidence and Reflections,” drawing on the analysis behind the poverty and vulnerability chapter of the White Paper. He spoke about how polycrises and weak policy responses since COVID have made poverty escapes increasingly fragile, how intergenerational mobility has stalled, and how an anti-poor tax structure risks deepening precarity.

He argued that development must shift from counting the poor to reducing precarity and enhancing intergenerational mobility. He stressed that while proven models exist, scaling them requires getting the politics of investment and the science of implementation right.

In August and September 2026, BIGD and its partners organized five events under the Catalyzing Whole Child Development in Bangladesh project, including three regional workshops in Jashore, Chattogram, and Rajshahi, followed by roundtable discussions in Dhaka and Sylhet.

BIGD's Senior Research Coordinators, James Ward Khakshi and Farah Muneer, shared key findings from the research and lessons for Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) systems in Bangladesh at the events. The research emphasized strengthening coordination among government agencies, promoting government ownership, expanding community-based services, improving data systems, and sustaining progress within existing government structures.

ময়লা পোড়ানোর ধোঁয়া মাতুয়াইল ও আমিনবাজার ল্যান্ডফিলের আশপাশের ঢাকাবাসীর ওপর কী প্রভাব ফেলছে?

মাতুয়াইল ও আমিনবাজার ল্যান্ডফিলে প্রতিদিন ঢাকার প্রায় ৫,০০০ টন বর্জ্য জমা হয়। আইনত খোলা জায়গায় বর্জ্য পোড়ানো নিষিদ্ধ হলেও, এই চর্চা পুরোপুরি বন্ধ হয়নি। ফলে বিষাক্ত ধোঁয়া আশপাশের এলাকাগুলোতে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে এবং মানুষ নিয়মিত এই ধোঁয়া নিঃশ্বাসের সঙ্গে গ্রহণ করে। নির্ভরযোগ্য স্থানীয় পর্যায়ের তথ্য না থাকায়, এসব আগুন শহরের বায়ুদূষণে ঠিক কতটা ভূমিকা রাখছে, তা বোঝা কঠিন। একইসঙ্গে বায়ু দূষণের জন্য দায়ীদের জবাবদিহির আওতায় আনাও কঠিন হয়ে পড়ে।

BIGD-তে আমরা বিশ্বাস করি, কার্যকর পদক্ষেপের ভিত্তি হলো গবেষণালব্ধ তথ্য। শিকাগো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের EPIC Air Quality Fund-এর সহায়তায় পরিচালিত Breathing Evidence প্রকল্পের মাধ্যমে আমরা Smart Air Bangladesh-এর সঙ্গে কাজ করছি। প্রকল্পের আওতায় মাতুয়াইল ও আমিনবাজার ল্যান্ডফিলে বায়ুর মান পরিমাপের জন্য একটি সেন্সর নেটওয়ার্ক স্থাপন করা হচ্ছে। এর মাধ্যমে এসব আগুন থেকে সৃষ্ট দূষণ পরিমাপ করা হবে।

বাংলাদেশের প্রথম স্থানীয় মালিকানাধীন রেফারেন্স-গ্রেড বায়ুমান পরিমাপ কেন্দ্রসহ এই নেটওয়ার্ক রিয়েল-টাইম তথ্যের সঙ্গে স্যাটেলাইট তথ্য ও বাতাসের গতিপথের তথ্য সমন্বয় করবে। এর মাধ্যমে স্থানীয় বায়ুদূষণের আকস্মিক বৃদ্ধি ল্যান্ডফিলের আগুনের সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত কি না, তা শনাক্ত করা এবং আশপাশের জনগোষ্ঠীর ওপর এর স্বাস্থ্যগত প্রভাব অনুমান করা সম্ভব হবে।

এই গবেষণা থেকে পাওয়া তথ্য হবে স্বচ্ছ এবং জনসাধারণের জন্য উন্মুক্ত, যা আইন প্রয়োগ ও জবাবদিহি নিশ্চিত করতে এবং আমাদের সবার জন্য নিরাপদ বাতাস রক্ষায় সহায়তা করবে।
