Corona hat unseren Alltag plötzlich umgekrempelt. Für die Klimaforschung machte der Lockdown aber auch ungeahnte Experimente möglich. Aquila Capital is introducing a research award (endowed with 20,000 Euros) for applicable solutions to combat climate change in Europe.

Schon jetzt zeigt sich, dass offenbar Wissenschaftlerinnen stärker von den Auswirkungen des Homeoffice betroffen sind: ihre Produktivität sinkt. Inside Higher Ed berichtet, dass seit März weniger Paper von Erstautorinnen eingereicht wurden. Grund ist die vermehrt von Frauen ausgeübte Arbeit im Bereich der Kinderbetreuung und Hausarbeit.

Dieter Kaufmann, Kanzler der Uni Ulm, wurde zum Thema "Prekäre Jobsituationen durch befristete Verträge" an deutschen Universitäten interviewt. Er ist der Meinung, dass die Befristung von Verträgen das Nachrücken weiterer Nachwuchsforscher zulässt.

Bei der letzten Unikanzler-Tagung in Bayreuth Mitte September einigten sich die deutschen Unikanzler in der „Bayreuther Erklärung“ darauf, den „Erhalt und die Entwicklung von Befristungsmöglichkeiten für wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter*innen“ zu fordern, und damit den andauernden Rufen nach Entfristung Einhalt zu gebieten. Die Resolution löste Empörung aus, siehe z.B. auf Twitter, Wiarda-Blog und Tagesspiegel.

-- The MICMoR Summer School 2019 has come to an end – New tools and impulses for young scientists! --

The focus of this year's summer school in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was the work with environmental data - from explorative data analysis to deep learning, organized by our Senior Scientist Dr. Christian Werner. The course welcomed 22 participants from 9 nations and was taught by 6 experts in this field.

Under the direction of Dr. Werner, the participants dealt with aspects of reproducible science, effective data processing, exploration and visualization. Experienced guest lecturers taught the basics of scientific data formats, machine learning and the use of neural networks for scientific purposes. Special attention was paid to the learning of the open source programming language Python and the use of the various data science extensions (PyData). New software packages were also presented and their use practiced on the basis of data from various areas of environmental and geosciences. Students were able to give presentations about their work and received a certificate of completion of the course.

Besides the work on the computers and the lectures there was again a Meet & Greet icebreaker on the evening of arrival and a sunny farewell barbecue.

We hope that the course could give the young scientists new tools for their scientific work and impulses for possible new perspectives and analyses in their projects.

We would like to thank all participants and speakers! We hope to see you again soon.

Die Habilitation stellt eine "deutsche Sonderform" dar. Seit vielen Jahren wird über die Abschaffung diskutiert und dennoch gibt es sie immer noch in Deutschland. Im internationalen Vergleich verschwenden deutsche angehende Lehrende Jahre mit ihrer Habilitation, während die Kollegen aus dem Ausland bereits nach ihrem PhD lehren (dürfen).

Our annual MICMoR Technical Short Course on `Flux Measurement Fundamentals´ has already become a tradition at IFU. This year it took place from July 29 to August 2, 2019, with 17 participants from 7 nations taking party. In lectures, fieldwork and discussions 5 IFU scientists focused on the use of micrometeorological methods to obtain and analyze fluxes of momentum, heat and gases by eddy-covariance.
