Our south east London location is home to a thriving art scene. The area hosts a variety of galleries, project spaces and studios that our students, staff and graduates work and exhibit in. These include on-site gallery Camberwell Space, Work Form, DKUK and Honeymoon 226. Many of our students live near Camberwell College of Arts. We have 4 halls of residence within walking distance. In autumn 2020, the College started work on an exciting new multi-purpose development in Peckham. Eagle Wharf will provide a new halls of residence building for UAL students alongside a creative digital hub for students, graduates and local residents.

Dear Camberwell: Before your story, there was theirs. ❤️

As we welcome a new generation of students to Camberwell, we also want to celebrate those who came before them and the history that has shaped the college we know today.

For the first instalment of Dear Camberwell, we’re taking a little trip through the archives to look back at student life over the years. 📸

Since opening in 1898 as the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, the college has welcomed generations of artists, designers and makers. From studying drawing and embroidery to wood carving and architecture, students have long been encouraged to explore, experiment and develop their creative voices.

Different faces, different decades, but that same curiosity, creativity and love of making.

These photographs are a reminder that Camberwell’s history isn’t just about its buildings or the work created here. It’s about the people, friendships and experiences that have shaped it along the way.

And to our newest students, you’re now part of that story too. ❤️

Life as a Fine Art student at Camberwell 🎨✨

Hi, I’m Nicole! 👋 I’m studying BA Fine Art at Camberwell College of Arts, and I’m taking you along for a little glimpse into my life as an art student.

From experimenting with new materials and working on ideas in the studio to lectures, library sessions and the occasional trip to South London Gallery (including the gift shop, obviously 👀).

There’s a lot more to studying Fine Art than just painting. It’s about researching, exploring ideas, trying things out and sometimes figuring it all out as you go.

What if a kiss could save you from drowning? 💋

The Kissing Cup Theatre by Camberwell alum YunJie Huang turns an everyday object into a small theatrical experience.

Inside each ceramic cup sits a nose. As the cup fills, it becomes submerged, only to be “saved” when the user kisses the cup and finishes their drink.

Behind the playful interaction is a more uncomfortable idea. The work explores how gaslighting and emotional manipulation can sometimes disguise themselves as expressions of love, making harmful behaviours difficult to recognise within a relationship.

YunJie Huang graduated from MA Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts in 2022. The Kissing Cup Theatre was nominated for Future 50 2024.

When architecture starts to bend, collapse and shift.

We visited Monika Sosnowska: Weight of Matter at South London Gallery, just beside our Camberwell College of Arts.
Spanning the Main Gallery and Fire Station, the exhibition brings together monumental sculptures made from steel, concrete and other industrial materials associated with modernist architecture. Sosnowska twists and deconstructs these familiar forms, exploring architecture, urban transformation and the ways spaces can reflect wider social and political change.

A little Hong Kong, a little London, and a lot of imagination 💌

Meet Wai Wai Or, a graduate from our MA Illustration course, whose project 'Love Letter to London' explores what it means to find a sense of belonging in a new city.

Combining sketching, storytelling and imagination, she brings London to life through a cast of characters, including Pineapple Cat, inspired by the iconic Hong Kong pineapple bun, and Tuxedo Cat, inspired by London’s feline residents.

In this piece, the pair use magic to lift a double-decker bus beneath Tower Bridge, transforming a historical London moment into a surreal meeting point between two cultures, places and identities.

Imagining botanical gardens architectural ruins in watercolour 🏛️

Meet Shutong Wang also known as COCO, a London-based artist and graduate from our MA Illustration course.

In Wang's words this project titled, 'Constructed Eden' explores, "the relationship between plants and human-made environments through a series of watercolour paintings and visual studies. I combined observation with imagination to create fictional landscapes that exist between reality and fantasy."

Experimenting with wood, design and symmetry 🪵

This project was created by Betty Dwyer, a graduate from our BA (Hons) Fine Art: Sculpture course. Titled 'All Along The Watchtower', Dwyer created this piece using wood-turned ball, hammered aluminium ball, steel tube goggles, acrylic plastic, plywood, skin-ply, wood vinyl, carpet tiles.

Exploring animals, symbolism and spirituality 🦅

Meet Ruyue Sun, a graduate from our MA Fine Art: Painting course. Sun's project called, 'The Animal Arcana' focuses on the artistic depiction of animals as "natural storytellers".

Explaining the inspiration behind her work in more detail, she shares, "I have recently developed considerable interest in Tarot mysticism and symbolism. I created a dialogue between the “soul” of each animal and the deeper truths of the tarot. Each animal is chosen to resonate with the core energy of a card (e.g. freedom, creativity, sovereignty...etc) I decided to use animals as the main messenger. They represent important life themes, spiritual lessons, and life-changing events."
