Our south east London location is home to a thriving art scene. The area hosts a variety of galleries, project spaces and studios that our students, staff and graduates work and exhibit in. These include on-site gallery Camberwell Space, Work Form, DKUK and Honeymoon 226. Many of our students live near Camberwell College of Arts. We have 4 halls of residence within walking distance. In autumn 2020, the College started work on an exciting new multi-purpose development in Peckham. Eagle Wharf will provide a new halls of residence building for UAL students alongside a creative digital hub for students, graduates and local residents.

Experimenting with wood, design and symmetry 🪵

This project was created by Betty Dwyer, a graduate from our BA (Hons) Fine Art: Sculpture course. Titled 'All Along The Watchtower', Dwyer created this piece using wood-turned ball, hammered aluminium ball, steel tube goggles, acrylic plastic, plywood, skin-ply, wood vinyl, carpet tiles.

Exploring animals, symbolism and spirituality 🦅

Meet Ruyue Sun, a graduate from our MA Fine Art: Painting course. Sun's project called, 'The Animal Arcana' focuses on the artistic depiction of animals as "natural storytellers".

Explaining the inspiration behind her work in more detail, she shares, "I have recently developed considerable interest in Tarot mysticism and symbolism. I created a dialogue between the “soul” of each animal and the deeper truths of the tarot. Each animal is chosen to resonate with the core energy of a card (e.g. freedom, creativity, sovereignty...etc) I decided to use animals as the main messenger. They represent important life themes, spiritual lessons, and life-changing events."

Exploring connections between memory, ritual, and architecture 🪑

This project titled, 'PURMARILI' is by Nutsa Museridze, our MA Interior And Spatial Design graduate. Museridze created this project as an "invitation to gather, share and listen." It combines a pavilion, a dinner table and transforms with each encounter, becoming a communal space for food, ritual and memory - a living Purmarili.

Describing her project in more detail, she says, "This project brings together the themes that shaped my research. The intimacy of dining rituals, the quiet labour of women, the resilience found within Georgian culture and the way grief and absence continue to live in the spaces where we gather. The pavilion holds these layers and responds to the people who enter it, carrying traces of gesture, emotion and shared experience."

This artist transforms clouds and fleeting moments into ethereal oil paintings ☁️

Meet Kate Samankova, a graduate from our BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting course. Samankova is a Ukrainian abstract painter based in London whose project called "RAYFALL" is a collection of three abstract oil paintings titled, "Typhoon" "Blushfall" and "Violetfall" exploring the ever-changing nature of clouds.

Describing her work in more detail she says, "I am drawn to transient impressions of light, shadow, and reflection. Through the expressive movement of brushstrokes and thick, sculptural palette knife marks, I bring physicality to what is otherwise impermanent. This idea is strongly influenced by Lee Ufan, whose philosophy of “the space between” has shaped the way I understand presence and absence in painting."

Created by our MA Fine Art: Painting graduate Zoya Manan, this project titled, 'Refracted Realities' explores the multifaceted nature of perspective, perception, beauty, and distortion through painting, portraits, and ceramics.

Manan aims to invite viewers to engage with the complexities of beauty and societal norms, reflecting on how personal experiences shape understanding of reality. By using layered techniques and vibrant colors, she aims to "challenge conventional narratives and inspire appreciation for diverse experiences that contribute to our collective identity."

Ultimately, she desires to "foster a dialogue that celebrates the beauty of imperfection."

The fascinating beauty of art and nature 🎨

This project was created by Gina Barnes, a graduate from our MA Fine Art: Painting course, an artist whose practice explores nature through surreal depictions of animals.

She employs symbolism and unexpected elements into her work, causing audiences to reimagine and challenge how animals are perceived. Her work reflects a lifelong fascination with both wildlife and domesticated creatures, alongside a growing awareness of the risks of misrepresentation in animal imagery, a fascination which began in her childhood.

The Park: A Second Home by MA Illustration student Xinlei 'Dubbie' Liu () is an exploration of how nature in Ruskin Park supports children’s emotional and mental well-being.

"Through observing how children connect with natural elements, I create print-based artworks capturing these moments of healing and joy," Dubbie explains.

The final outcome is a series of prints evoking the warmth and comfort of childhood memories.

Made by Xuya Wu () from MA Fine Art: Drawing, 'Un-Rotted Bloom' is an experiment with materials, drawing attention to the changes and impacts that man-made objects have on nature.

"The glass petals tempered in thousand-degree fires, writhe into form under human manipulation," explains Xuya with vivid description.

"They stand silently as sculptures, examining their creator and fulfilling the cult of aesthetics that has been imposed by humanity’s coerced idolatry of beauty."
