Every book opens a door to a new world of ideas.

At Edge Hill University, the Catalyst offers countless opportunities to explore, question and discover.

Through our Discover More platform, you can access millions of resources, bringing the world of psychology to your fingertips.

But discovery doesn't always begin with a focused search.

Often, the most interesting discoveries are the ones we weren't looking for.

That's the beauty of serendipity.

And here's something special.

Among the books on our shelves, you might find one written by the very academics who teach you.

Sometimes, the people behind the books are closer than you think.

We are looking for baby scientists aged 4–24 months to help us learn more about how babies and young children explore, learn and develop. Could your little one become a baby scientist?

🗣️ Lived experience is expertise.

Today, on World Mental Health Day, the WHO campaign “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change” calls for people with lived experience of mental health conditions to help shape the policies, services and decisions that affect their lives.
Experiencing mental health difficulties and seeking, receiving or struggling to access support can reveal barriers that professional training and research alone may overlook. Meaningful involvement means giving people opportunities to influence what happens next.

🎓 This matters in how we support our students, too.

Students bring different experiences, circumstances and support needs to university. Listening to their perspectives helps us understand barriers to seeking help, respond to the pressures they face, and shape more accessible and inclusive learning environments.

As a Psychology department, we want students to feel able to raise concerns with their personal tutors and access the University’s wellbeing support. Their voices should also help guide how we develop teaching and student support.
Supporting mental health means listening, responding and involving people in decisions that affect them. 💬

✨Learn Beyond the Lecture Theatre ✨
Want to take your Psychology degree beyond the classroom?
Our Student Internship Scheme gives you the chance to work on real projects, develop practical skills, and gain hands-on experience alongside academic staff. Whether you’re interested in research, events, student engagement, marketing, data analysis, or supporting departmental initiatives, you’ll have the opportunity to put your psychological knowledge into practice.
But it’s about more than boosting your CV 👇
✅ Build confidence
✅ Develop professional skills
✅ Grow your network
✅ Explore future career paths
✅ Make a real impact within the department
It’s a fantastic way to enhance your university experience, meet new people, challenge yourself, and discover what excites you beyond your course.
Because some of the most valuable learning happens when you step outside the lecture theatre. 💙

🎉 Congratulations to Dr Michel Belyk on their promotion to Reader at Edge Hill University!

Michel’s research explores the brain mechanisms that enable human speech, with a particular focus on how we control our voices and how differences in neurobiology contribute to speech differences such as stammering.

Reflecting on this achievement, Michel acknowledged the colleagues, mentors and collaborators who have supported their journey, emphasising that “good research is fundamentally collaborative.”

Bringing together different perspectives, expertise and ways of thinking is central to rigorous and informative psychological research. We’re delighted to celebrate this milestone with our colleague! 👏
