The University of Jammu and Kashmir was founded in the year 1948. In the year 1969 it was bifurcated into two full-fledged Universities: University of Kashmir at Srinagar and University of Jammu at Jammu. The University of Kashmir is situated at Hazratbal in Srinagar. It is flanked by the world famous Dal Lake on its eastern side and Nigeen Lake on the western side. The Main Campus of the University spread over 247 acres of land is divided into three parts – Hazratbal Campus, Naseem Bagh Campus and Mirza Bagh Campus (serving residential purpose). Additional land has been acquired at Zakura near the main campus for further expansion of the University. The tranquil ambience of the Campus provides the right kind of atmosphere for serious study and research. Over the Years University of Kashmir has expanded substantially. It has established Satellite Campuses at Anantnag (South Campus) , Baramulla (North Campus) and Kupwara (Kupwara Campus) to make higher education more accessible to people living in remote areas of Kashmir valley. The University has also established a Sub-Office at Jammu to cater to the needs of the candidates enrolled with the University from outside Kashmir. The University is committed to provide an intellectually stimulating environment for productive learning to enhance the educational, economic, scientific, business and cultural environment of the region. The University offers programmes in all the major faculties; Arts, Business & Management Studies, Education, Law, Applied Sciences & Technology, Biological Sciences, Physical & Material Sciences, Social Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Oriental Learning and Music & Fine Arts. It has been constantly introducing innovative/ new programmes to cater to the needs and demands of the students and the society. Over the years, the University has marched towards excellence in its programmes and activities. It has been re-accredited as Grade-A+ University by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India. This is recognition and reflection of the high standard of quality in teaching and research at the University of Kashmir.

The University of Kashmir (KU) observed Vigilance Awareness Week 2026 at its Main Campus under the theme “Probity for Prosperity,” emphasising integrity, transparency, accountability and ethical conduct in public service.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of honesty and responsibility in public service and encourage employees to uphold ethical standards in their professional conduct.

In her message, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan stressed on the importance of maintaining transparency and integrity in all aspects of institutional functioning. She said that public institutions must promote a culture of fairness, accountability and responsible conduct. “Integrity and transparency must guide every decision we make in public service,” she said.

Speaking on the occasion, Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, said that accountability and adherence to established rules and procedures are essential for the effective functioning of any institution. “A transparent and accountable work culture begins with each one of us taking responsibility for our actions,” he said.

Dean, School of Law KU, Prof. Shahnaz, highlighted the importance of legal awareness and ethical conduct in strengthening institutional accountability. She said that respect for the rule of law and adherence to laid down procedures are necessary for ensuring transparency in public institutions.

SSP ACB Srinagar, Mr. Manzoor Ahmad Mir (JKPS), spoke about the role of the Anti-Corruption Bureau in addressing corruption and promoting accountability. He emphasized the importance of public awareness and collective responsibility in preventing corruption.

The event concluded with a pledge, led by Prof. Iqbal, to uphold integrity, promote transparency and discharge official responsibilities with honesty and accountability. It was attended by various deans, heads of departments, University officers, and non-teaching staff of the campus.

The event proceedings were conducted by Sheikh Asif, Joint Registrar KU, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Ashfaq Zarri, Special Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor, KU.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nilofer Khan, on Friday inaugurated the Chrysanthemum Garden, Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood, at the University Landscape Development Division (ULDD) Nursery, Naseem Bagh Campus.
Prof. Nilofer Khan appreciated the efforts of University Landscape Development Division (ULDD) for developing the Chrysanthemum Garden. She acknowledged their contribution towards the maintenance and enhancement of the University’s green spaces and the overall campus landscape.
The garden features an impressive collection of approximately three lakh blooms representing 40 different varieties of chrysanthemums, including a unique green-flowered variety.

43rd ISMPP Annual National Convention held at KU

Minister for Agriculture Production, Finance, Mining and Cooperatives J&K Govt Shri Javid Ahmad Dar, addressed the 43rd Annual National Convention of the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology (ISMPP) as chief guest at the University of Kashmir (KU) on Thursday.

The convention is being held on the theme “Advances and Challenges in Plant Pathology under Climate-Resilient Agriculture.”

The three-day convention, from October 29 to 31, is jointly organised by the University’s Department of Botany and ISMPP, with Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur.

In his presidential address, Shri Javid A Dar said that several apple varieties once commonly grown in Kashmir, a decade or two ago, are no longer found in the Valley. He linked this change to evolving horticultural practices and stressed the need to identify and promote varieties and crops that are both economically viable and resilient to changing climatic conditions.

Vice-Chancellor KU Prof. Nilofer Khan who was guest of honour on the occasion said the theme was timely in view of climate change, emerging plant diseases, declining soil health, food security and environmental sustainability.

Dr. K. L. Gujar, Joint Director, ICAR, New Delhi, and Prof. S. S. Chahal, President, ISMPP and former Vice-Chancellor of PAU and MPUAT, also addressed the inaugural session. Dr. Pokhar Rawal, Secretary, ISMPP, spoke about the national convention. A souvenir was also released on the occassion.

Prof. Aijaz Ahmad Wani, Head, Dept.of Botany KU and Convener, delivered the welcome address whileas opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Mohd. Yaqub Bhat, Dept. of Botany KU and Organising Secretary of the event. Prof. Abdul Hamid Wani, Dept of Botany is the Co- convener of the event.

The inaugural proceedings were conducted by Prof. Anzar Ahmad Khuroo, Dept of Botany KU whileas vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Sajad-un Nabi, Co-organising Secretary.

The Health Centre, University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with Amneal Healthcare, Mumbai, organised a one-day Breast Cancer Awareness Session-cum-Screening Camp to encourage young women to take an informed and proactive approach to their health. The session focused on breast cancer awareness, the importance of early detection, and practical self-examination techniques. Guest speaker Dr. Nahida Yousuf, Radiation Oncologist, GMC Srinagar, shared insights into understanding, supporting, and prevention of breast cancer, highlighting the role of timely medical consultation and regular health checks.

Director, DLL&SD, Prof. Bashir Joo; Head, Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Dr. Tanveer Ali; and Coordinator, Health Centre, Dr. Khalid Nazir were present on the occasion.The programme also included a screening camp, providing students and staff an opportunity to access screening services and seek guidance on breast health.

Participants appreciated the initiative for creating an open space to discuss breast health, address concerns and learn practical ways to recognise potential warning signs. The camp also highlighted the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding breast cancer and sharing reliable health information within families and communities.

Dr. Surayya Jan, Medical Officer KU conducted the event proceedings and delivered the vote of thanks.

Congratulations to Prof. Naseer Iqbal on the extension of his term as Visiting Associate at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune.

Prof. Iqbal, Registrar, University of Kashmir, is a Professor of Physics with years of experience in astrophysics and research, with papers published in reputed journals.

His research interests include gravitational clustering of galaxies, X-ray astronomy, archaeoastronomy, cosmology and science education. He has also worked on five ISRO RESPOND-sponsored research projects funded by the Department of Space, Government of India.

In recognition of his public service, Prof. Iqbal was conferred the Chief Minister’s Award for Honesty, Integrity and Meritorious Public Service in 2026. He is a life member of the Astronomical Society of India, the Indian Physics Association and the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA).

The University of Kashmir congratulates Prof. Iqbal on the extension and wishes him the very best in his continued academic and research pursuits.

Students of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Kashmir, secured second and third prizes in the quiz competition at a state-level event held at SVS College of Pharmacy, Sunderbani, Rajouri.

B. Pharm. 6th semester students: Annas Rayees, Zubair Majeed and Haqnawaz Lone won the second prize, while Mahil Lateef, Faheem Ahmad Wani and Yasir Ahmad secured the third prize.

Organised by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), New Delhi, in association with the Jammu and Kashmir Pharmacy Colleges Association, the event marked the observance of World Pharmacists Day and National Pharmacy Week 2026. It brought together hundreds of students from various pharmacy colleges across Jammu & Kashmir. Held under the theme *“Swasth Bharat: Combating Antimicrobial Resistance,”* the programme highlighted the importance of responsible antibiotic use, awareness about antimicrobial resistance and the role of pharmacists in strengthening public health.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal, Dean, School of Applied Sciences, Prof Mubashir Hussain Masoodi, and Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Prof. Sabeeha Shafi, congratulated the students on their achievement and encouraged them to continue participating in academic and professional events.

Dr. Montu Kumar M. Patel, President, PCI, and Sushil Sudan, Central Council Member J&K, PCI, were also present at the event.

The students were accompanied by faculty members Dr. Shahid-ud-din Wani and Dr. Reyaz Hassan.
