𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐆𝐄 | Riverside College earns DILG recognition

Recognizing its role in community development, Riverside College, Inc. received a Certificate of Recognition as a Highly Trusted Partner of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Bacolod City at L’Fisher Hotel, October 22.

The recognition honored the college for supporting DILG Bacolod City’s programs, projects, and activities in local communities throughout 2026.

The certificate was awarded during CommuNect: Synergy Social, organized by the City Municipal Coordinating Committee, and the Bacolod City Local Governance Resource Center to recognize organizations, academic institutions, and community stakeholders contributing to local governance, and sustainable community development.

Student Affairs and Admissions Manager Dr. Elvi Summer V. Idiosolo, received the certificate on behalf of the college during the celebration of the 35th Local Government Code Month, themed “2026 PALANAN-AWON: Kusog sang Katawhan, Kusog sang Lokal nga Panguluhan.”

| 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬.

Every day, our hands touch countless things, from door handles and mobile phones to food, money, and the people we care about. Yet, in the middle of our busy lives, we often forget one of the simplest ways to protect ourselves and others: it is by washing our hands.

Observed on October 15th each year and primarily established in 2008, Global Handwashing Day reminds us that proper handwashing is more than just a daily routine. It is a simple but powerful practice that helps prevent the spread of germs and reduces the risk of illnesses such as diarrhea and respiratory infections. This advocacy continues to encourage governments, schools, and communities to invest in clean water, soap, and handwashing facilities, particularly for children, and to improve our handwashing habits.

This Global Handwashing Day, let us remember that protecting lives does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with the hands we use every day and the simple choice to keep them clean.

𝐊𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐌 | PinagkaAETAng Karapatan

“Anong silbi ng sinasabi nila na ang unang tao sa Pilipinas ay ang mga Katutubo, ngunit hindi nila kayang irespeto at igalang?”

Hindi matatapos ang pakikipaglaban ng bawat Katutubong Pilipino sa kanilang pag-aari kung patuloy na sinasamantala at sinasabotahe ng mga nasa kapangyarihan ang bawat karapatan nila. Ang pakikibaka ng mga Aeta ay patunay na hanggang ngayon, ang pagpapatupad ng "Pax Silica" ay patuloy na nagdudulot ng pahirap sa halip na ginhawa.

Sa pangunguna ng US International, 1,600 ektaryang lupain ang sasakupin ng industriyal na sentrong ipapatayo sa New Clark City sa Capas. Ang proyektong ito na susuportahan ng Artificial Intelligence (AI), ay tiyak na direktang makakaapekto sa mga Aeta. Kapag naaprubahan ito, mapipilitang lumipat ang mga nakatira rito, na siyang sisira sa pamumuhay at hanapbuhay ng mga magsasakang Aeta.

Aabot sa 200 na pamilya o 1,000 na mga indibidwal ang tiyak na maaapektuhan. Isa sa mga pangunahing suliraning kakaharapin nila ay ang kawalan ng malinis na tubig, mga lupang sakahan, at ang pagkawala ng mga pinaghirapang ari-arian. Kaugnay nito ang hindi makatarungang pang-aalipusta sa karapatan ng bawat Aeta. Sa halip na bigyan sila ng kalinga at proteksyon, sila pa ang pangunahing puntirya at tatanggalan ng dignidad.

Patunay sa kanilang tikas ang petisyon ng mga Aeta na umabot na sa 400,000 beripikadong lagda upang tutulan ang proyekto. Nito lamang nakaraang Agosto, pormal na ring kinilala at pinagtibay ang kanilang paglaban sa Pax Silica. Pinatutunayan lamang nito na ang lakas ng nagkakaisang komunidad ay kayang pumigil sa mga mapanlinlang na proyektong yumuyurak sa kanilang karapatan.

Kung ang kanilang pakikibaka ay naglalayong ipagtanggol ang kanilang karapatan, hindi ibig-sabihin na bulag sila sa mga modernong pakinabang. Ngunit aanhin ang panandaliang pakinabang kung ang kapalit nito ay ang tuluyang pagkawala ng mga lupang minana pa sa kanilang mga ninuno? Ang bawat ektarya ng lupang kanilang sisirain ay naging saksi sa kasaysayan, kaluluwa, at natatanging pagkakakilanlan ng kulturang Pilipino na hindi matutumbasan ng anumang teknolohiya.

Samakatuwid, ang pagtatayo ng ganitong mga data center ay isang malaking sampal na nagpapakita ng kawalan ng respeto hindi lamang sa mga katutubong Pilipino, kundi pati na rin sa kulturang nakakabit sa bansang Pilipinas. Ipinapakita lamang nito kung paano nasisilaw ang pamahalaan sa mga banyaga habang unti-unting nilulunod ang sariling bayan. Nawa’y mapagtanto ng pamahalaan na hindi dapat maging rason ang kaunlaran para mawalan ng tahanan at kinalakihang lupain ang ating mga katutubong ninuno.

You don't have to lose yourself trying to keep up with the world.

World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, is a reminder that it is okay to pause when everything starts to feel overwhelming. In a world where almost all people carry these burdens every day, even the strongest individuals, regardless of our age, occupation, or circumstances, we are all human beings who deserve understanding, compassion, and rest.

On this Mental Health Day, may we become gentler with ourselves and more understanding of others, remembering that everyone is fighting battles we may never see. Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is not to keep pushing forward, but to give ourselves permission to pause, breathe, and begin again.
