Inclusion begins with the choices we make every day. A student who is welcomed into a group project. A customer who can easily enter a store because of a ramp. An employee who receives the support they need to do their job well. These moments may seem small, but for a Person with Disability, they can mean the difference between feeling left out and feeling like they truly belong.

The Magna Carta for Persons with Disability reminds us that every PWD has the right to dignity, equal opportunities, accessibility, and full participation in society. We can turn these rights into everyday actions by remembering three simple words:

Respect begins with how we treat people. Promote a culture where every PWD is recognized for their abilities, not defined by their disability.

At school, invite a classmate who is a PWD to join your group instead of assuming they cannot contribute. At work, evaluate a colleague based on their skills and performance. In everyday conversations, use respectful language and speak directly to the PWD instead of speaking only to a companion or caregiver.

When respect comes first, confidence grows and opportunities follow.

A welcoming community is built through simple acts of kindness and thoughtful actions.

Hold the door open for a PWD using a wheelchair, but always ask before offering assistance. Make sure meeting venues, classrooms, or community halls are accessible so everyone can participate. If a friend who is a PWD is invited to a community event, make sure they have the same opportunity to join the activities as everyone else.

When people feel welcomed, they are more confident to share their ideas, talents, and dreams.

Inclusion becomes meaningful when it is practiced every day. Develop habits that make your community more accessible and accepting.

Teachers can provide learning materials in formats that meet different needs. Employers can offer reasonable accommodations so qualified PWD can perform their jobs effectively. Community leaders can install ramps, improve sidewalks, and ensure public programs are open to everyone.

These actions may seem ordinary, but they open doors to a better quality of life.

By choosing to Promote respect, Welcome everyone, and Develop inclusive communities, we help create a country where every PWD is given the opportunity to live with dignity.

Inclusion is not measured by what we say. It is measured by what we do.

Remember, PWDeng PWDe kahit PWD!

"Equip is an honest word. After all, we all need to be equip. Nobody becomes an expert leader overnight," Student Affairs and Admissions Manager Elvi Summer Idiosolo said.

"Being a student leader is real, [it is] not just glamorous. [It means] carrying more than your titleโ€”not seeking the recognition. If [you're] doing the right thing, if you're doing what your supposed to do, you will just shine, you need not seek the recognition. It means showing up, working hard with a heart of a leader," she added.

is a purposeful celebration that recognizes the ๐—Ÿ๐—š๐—•๐—ง๐—ค๐—œ๐—”+ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†'s progress toward equal rights while honoring those who have faced violence and discrimination throughout history. This month-long event is a vital societal visibility, driven by community initiatives, and continues to draw attention to the ongoing challenges affecting the community.

Pride Month became a global annual celebration because it started as an activism in one place and it spread all over the world. It is not just an ordinary celebration but a call to protest, reflecting enthusiasm and advocacies as part of the tradition. It is traditionally celebrated every year from June 1st to June 30th, with June 28th standing out as a particularly significant date.

On ๐˜‘๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐Ÿค๐Ÿช, ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿซ, the Stonewall Inn in New York City's Greenwich Village became the center for a series of spontaneous, violent protests by the LGBTQIA+ community in response to a police raid. During the 1960s, homosexual acts were widely criminalized, and police routinely targeted gay bars, exposing and harassing the patrons inside. Police frequently exploited outdated "masquerade" and "cross-dressing" laws to raid bars and arrest transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals. These regulations required people to wear a set number of clothing items deemed "appropriate" for the gender listed on their state ID. People back then stood their ground and fought back against police officers after being subjected to repeated harassment and violence.

Here are some noteworthy people who joined the protest during the rebellion and subsequent early Pride marches:
A Black transgender woman and performance artist who was a central figure in the rebellion and co-founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries).

Here are some major Pride celebrations held around the world annually: New York City Pride is a massive event that draws millions of participants and spectators, filling the avenues and requiring extensive street closures across the city. San Francisco Pride is one of the most well-known Pride celebrations in the United States, featuring a large festival footprint. WorldPride Amsterdam is an international Pride celebration and a definitive highlight for travel. London Pride is one of Europeโ€™s most well-known Pride parades. Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras may not take place during the traditional Pride Month, but this world-renowned LGBTQIA+ event is absolutely worth building an entire trip around.

Check for Pride celebrations in your community or nearby areas, as many cities host independent events. Smaller gatherings are often highly accessible and deeply rooted in the local communities. People in the community are respectful and welcoming especially allies of the community.

Despite the progress when it comes to their acceptance in the society, it remains a painful reality that there are still discrimination and violence going on. Some are isolated cases and some got widely known in an international news.

Pride Month isn't a request for everyone to understand their livesโ€”it's a demand to respect their humanity. If you cannot find it in your heart to accept them, you must still choose to respect them. No one should ever have to fight just to survive.

By the time third year was nearing its end, I think I had become good at pretending.

Pretending I wasn't looking for Gabriel whenever I entered the room. Pretending that my heart didnโ€™t skip a beat whenever our names appeared together in council group chats. Pretending that seeing, or hearing Gabrielโ€™s laugh across a crowded hallway didnโ€™t somehow make the rest of my day.

If someone asked me when I started falling for him, I wouldnโ€™t think Iโ€™d know the answer.

It wasnโ€™t a single moment. There was no dramatic realization, no sudden spark, no scene where everything around him faded into a monochromatic background and a romantic soundtrack magically played. Love, at least in my experience, had been much quieter than that. It disguised itself as curiosity at first, then it turned into admiration, until one day I realized I had spent three years thinking about the same person.

The realization came to me sometime during our lecture in GEP where I had a hard time paying attention to. The professor was discussing neurologic conditions, but I found myself staring at a photo on my phone when I should have searched for the terms I didnโ€™t understand in the lecture.

It wasnโ€™t intentional, at least, thatโ€™s what I told myself.

I flinched. It was Carl, slipping into the empty seat beside me.

โ€œHoy, wala ah! May gintan-aw lang ko nga shared post.โ€

โ€œRason! Pamati nada kay sir hu, ma-quiz sโ€™ya bala 20 items, 10 items identification.โ€

โ€œGapamati ko ya!โ€

โ€œGapamati pero gasige pa stalk?โ€

I didnโ€™t answer. Carl looked at me for a long moment before sighing.

โ€œHalin mo pa na sโ€™ya first year crush di โ€˜ba? Wala ka gyapon nag-confess haw?โ€

โ€œAgue ah, hinaya lang bala tingog mo!โ€

โ€œConfess na bala, teh!โ€

โ€œNugay da, Carl ah, napa-delulu mo โ€˜ko bala pirme!โ€

โ€œSus, kag ginakilig-kilig ka man? Lantawa bala ngirit mo hu!โ€ he laughed.

I couldnโ€™t answer, I was literally pulling off strings just to help myself stop from smiling too obvious.

But he was right on one thing. Carl wasnโ€™t wrong about Gabriel. I had liked him for far too long yet I still did not have the courage to confess to him.

For three long years, Gabriel had become such a permanent fixture in my life that I couldnโ€™t even remember when I started to like him. Though we werenโ€™t strangers to each other, that wouldโ€™ve been easier.

Both of us belonged to the Nursing Department Council, which meant we attended the same meetings, participated in the same events, and shared many of the same friends. We greeted each other when necessary, occasionally exchanged conversations, sometimes we even sat at the same table during council activities, or at dinner tables after a long tiring day at the council. And somehow, that made everything worse. Because every interaction gave me just enough hope to keep liking him.

Oh, and the most funny thing, he hasnโ€™t done anything to me at all.

By the time Collegian Fest arrived, the entire campus seemed to transform overnight. Students rushed between venues carrying banners and props. Different departments prepared for competitions, performances, and sporting events. The music and the counting of choreographies echoed through the quadrangle from morning until evening, and the Nursing Council found itself busier than ever.

I should have focused on my responsibilities, instead, I spent an embarrassing amount of time being aware of Gabriel.

One afternoon, while taking a nap under a table at the corner of the room, I suddenly woke up from the voice of our council governor, saying all council members should head down the quadrangle to cheer for our department. Though it might sound disobedient, I didnโ€™t listen and continued to sleep.

By the time I woke up, I opened my eyes to see some members still in the room. Including him. I wasnโ€™t sure if I still wanted to go out, but I had no choice. I got up, no makeup on, my face still puffy and my hair was wild. I couldnโ€™t even look at him when I went to the restroom.

By the time I was finished, he went up to me.

His voice was smooth, and his eyes looked at me briefly. The sweet scent of his shirt gushing down my nose.

โ€œSabay na lang sa โ€˜kon.โ€

Then, just like that, he left. His arms wrapped with balloons they will use for cheering.

It wasnโ€™t even a remarkable interaction. It lasted less than a minute. Yet later that night, while lying in bed, his voice kept repeating in my head for at least twenty times.

The problem with having a crush for three years, is that reality eventually catches up to you.

Third year was ending.

Everyone talked about internships, board exams, graduation, and future plans. The closer we came to fourth year, the more I felt a quiet panic in my chest.

Because what if this was it?

What if one day, I graduate without ever being able to tell Gabriel what I truly feel about him and we go our separate ways? Itโ€™s a thought that bothered me more than rejection ever could.

One evening while I was studying in my room for a quiz, a familiar voice came up to my ear, playing from my laptop.

โ€œTo be young and in love in New York Cityโ€

โ€œTo not know who I am, but still know that Iโ€™m good long as youโ€™re with meโ€

The sooner I realized it, the song was already halfway through the lyrics.

โ€œI like me better when Iโ€™m with youโ€ฆ โ€ I absent mindedly sang along with Lauv, my head swirling with thoughts of Gabriel.

Right after the song, I scrolled on my phone and stumbled on a playlist I had collected over the years. Songs that reminded me of himโ€”of the council meetings where he was present, the random conversations, the campus events, the stolen glances.

Three years of feelings hidden inside a collection of music. I stared at the screen for a long time before laughing softly at myself and my heart slowly pumping more than it should.

โ€œBahala na da ah!โ€ I told myself right before I started looking up for ideas on how to confess.

A week came by and I found myself standing right beside Jollibee, holding an envelope I had spent almost an entire week contemplating if I should be doing it, but before I could even realize it, Gabriel was already heading towards me after I texted him, saying I had something to give.

It was only then when it hit me, Iโ€™d finally done it. I finally confessed. Though it wasnโ€™t in the way others hand out their affections verbally. Inside the envelope, I had made Gabriel a portrait, and in the process, I didnโ€™t even mind staying awake far later than I should have just to perfect the details, though to be honest, my skill wasnโ€™t that perfect. I also wrote him letter after letter but then, I thought it could be too much to give him everything I had written all at once so I decided to settle for one letter. And finally, I included the playlist I had made for him and rearranged some songs to clearly state my feelings.

It wasnโ€™t flashy, it wasnโ€™t dramatic, but it was honest. And that actually terrified me. The actual confession happened on a Friday night. There were no fireworks, no cinematic background music, just the busy bustling of the jeepneys and the awkward posture I had when I handed him the gift.

โ€œMapuli ka na? Pasakyon ta kaโ€ he offered after receiving it.

But the dumb side of me refused.

And just like that, I left him, then completely regretting how Iโ€™d acted towards him. I was just glad he didnโ€™t get to see how stiff my legs were when I was walking away.

โ€œOmg!โ€ I kept telling myself over and over.

And that was it.

That night I waited for his response, fearing for the worse that could happen, my heart literally bursting on my ribs. Then came the next day. Then the next week. Then nothing.

That was simply the whole three years of having a crush on Gabriel.

At first, the silence hurt, then it confused me, though eventually, it became something I simply learned to live with. Months passed, and life moved on. Yet occasionally, I could still catch myself searching for Gabriel around the school. Sometimes he showed up, sometimes he didnโ€™t. Other times, our mutual friends exchanged strange looks whenever both of us were in the same room, though I never really understood any of it. I simply just told myself it didnโ€™t matter. I told myself I was moving on, and for the most part, I believed it.

Then, the year-end council celebration arrived sooner than expected. By then, I felt lighter than I had in months. The confession no longer brought me embarrassment. The unanswered feelings no longer consumed me. I still liked Gabriel, perhaps I always would, but the ache had softened to something manageable.

For the first time in a long time, I felt free.

But that feeling only lasted right up until Gabriel stepped onto the stage.

The crowd then erupted with cheers.

โ€œCheer man da sa crush mo teh!โ€ Carl tapped with a force on my back.

โ€œIkaw da Carl ah, kairita!โ€ I brushed him off.

โ€œHimo-himo ka naman da storya!โ€

โ€œAsus! Malay mo i-surprise ya man ka.โ€

โ€œHipos da, ague, ah!โ€

I rolled my eyes on him before any hope could rise up in my head.

Then the music started. At first, I wasnโ€™t paying attention as I was in the food section trying to get a piece of burger and a drink. Not until I heard the first opening notes.

My stomach dropped. The song sounded more than familiar.

Painfully familiar.

As the lyrics filled the room, the realization struck me with a force that I choked on the piece of meat I thought I had been chewing on.

I knew the song so well. Painfully well.

Not because it was popular. Not because Iโ€™d heard it recently.

I knew it because I had carefully placed it on the playlist months ago. On Gabrielโ€™s playlist.

No. Thereโ€™s no way! I thought.

Slowly, I started looking up at him performing on stage, but he was already looking at me.

The rest of the room suddenly disappeared. The cheering, the music, the lightsโ€ฆ like there were only the two of us standing facing each other. And what I thought that only happened on the television, suddenly seemed real through my own eyes.

Everything faded into a monochromatic background and all the colors seemed to only pop from him. He was shining on stage, beneath the weight of that single gaze.

For months, I thought I had convinced myself that his silence meant rejection. For months I had forced myself to accept that Gabriel didnโ€™t feel the sameโ€ฆ

โ€œDamn, I like me better when Iโ€™m with you.โ€ The song played.

Then, he did something that made my heart stop completely. Gabriel stepped off the stage and began walking toward me. My pulse thundered in my ears, and around us, others continued to cheer, laughing, taking pictures, completely unaware that my entire world had just tilted sideways.

โ€œStay a while, stay a while,โ€

I could almost hear his voice behind my ears.

He kept walking. One step. Then another.

Then anotherโ€ฆ

โ€œStay here with me,โ€

Until he was close enough that I could see the nervousness hidden beneath his usually calm expression.

Close enough now that I never realized I had never seen Gabriel look uncertain before. And for the first time, Gabriel looked just as terrified as I felt. And somehow, that frightened me even more.

Because suddenly, the unanswered question wasnโ€™t whether Gabriel knew. Or whether Gabriel cared.

โ€œI knew from the first time, Iโ€™d stay for a long time causeโ€ฆโ€

The noise suddenly became more impossibly distant, until Gabriel was right in front of me, his lips calling my name as he sang along the last line.

โ€œI like me better when Iโ€™m with you, Dave.โ€

I wouldnโ€™t call myself a fan of family reunions. The memory of my last attendance had faded so far into the background that I could barely reach it.

Things were simpler back then. Or maybe people just knew less about me.

Not that I had drastically changed over the years; it was just that not everyone had been made aware of what has been going on in the meantime. So much so that the only familiar faces Iโ€™d greeted besides my immediate family were my closest cousins.

My hair was shorter now, though not enough to earn dramatic gasps from older relatives. Just enough to invite the occasional โ€œPareho na ta haircut gha,โ€ from an aunt I only saw every few years. The polo I wore had once belonged to my dad. At least, it did until I stole it sometime between senior high and my first year of college.

Vintage, according to him. Old, according to my sister. Comfortable, according to me.

He never asked for it back.

The glass of fruit punch in my grasp gently nips at my fingertips, pulling me to find comfort in the atmosphere that felt heavier upon my arrival less than an hour ago.

โ€œKrish?โ€ A voice caught me before I even fully turned.

Not loud. Not sharp. Just certain.

I blinked, and there they were.

Older, sureโ€”but not unfamiliar. Never, not in my eyes. Not in the way distance makes us strangers. More so like time simply softened the edges of a face I had once known by instinct.

For a second, I forgot to move.

Then it clicked. โ€œLola,โ€ I breathe, a smile that slowly reached my eyes forming before I could decide whether I was ready for it. โ€œAri ka na gali.โ€

โ€œAbi ko hindi ka na mag-abot sini nga tuig,โ€ she says, reaching for my arm like I had never left it out of reach.

For her? Never. And I let her.

It was easy. Muscle memory.

We fell into conversation the way we always didโ€”continuation at its finest. No formal introductions, or catching up from scratch. Like someone had been holding our place in a conversation I didnโ€™t know was still ongoing.

The crime of time had nothing against this.

โ€œHowโ€™s school?โ€ she asks. Her head gently tilts to rest on my shoulder.

โ€œOkay lang,โ€ I say, resting my own against hers. โ€œPortanti buhi ah.โ€ She laughs at my follow-up, softer this time.

โ€œStill like that, ha?โ€

Still like that.

I didnโ€™t ask her what she meant. I didnโ€™t need to.

The room kept movingโ€”plates being passed, uncles laughing too loudly at a joke I didnโ€™t catch, a chair scraping back somewhere across the room, the karaoke machine humming a timeless tuneโ€”something from the 70s or 80sโ€”probably.

Yet here, tucked in the small pocket of familiarity, things felt still enough to almost forget the rest of the function existed.

Lolaโ€™s eyes briefly drifted to my shirt. Not in surprise.

More like recognition.

โ€œThat used to be your loloโ€™s. Then he gave it to your papa.โ€

I look down at it instinctively with a small chuckle. โ€œGani man,โ€ I respond. โ€œGinkawat ko ni. Shush lang.โ€

She huffs out a laugh. โ€œPareho man gid gihapon batasan nโ€™yo.โ€

I smiled at that. Something warm began to grow in my chest that I donโ€™t remember feeling in so long. For a moment, I almost relaxed into it.

Almost.

Then she tilted her head slightly, like she had just remembered something mid-conversation. โ€œMay boyfriend ka na?โ€

The question landed gently. It was casual, even.
Like it had every right to be there.

I didnโ€™t answer immediately.

It was not like I didnโ€™t hear it.

It was more so because my mind, again, did the thingโ€ฆ the quiet thing that it always doesโ€”open multiple doors at once, and I only had one chance at stepping out of the best exit in one piece.

Suddenly I became more aware of everything:
How the drink in my hand suddenly felt colder,
The ends of my hair brushing my nape,
The slight tightness around my neck that made breathing feel deliberate,
The way my name still sounded like something I could grow into or out of depending on who was speaking.

She waited.

Not impatientโ€ฆjust present.

I let out a small breath I didnโ€™t realize I was holding, lifting the rim of my glass to take a swig of my punch.

Then I smiled.

โ€œWala, lola.โ€

A pause.

My eyes drift down to my shoes, dragging the toe against the carpet like I wanted it to swallow the moment whole.

โ€œGirlfriend lang.โ€
