With the recent incident at BatStateU The NEU - Lipa Campus, our community is once again reminded of how strict certain university policies are and how far the university still is from achieving true inclusivity. We believe that Ms. Alday’s experience is not an isolated case, there have been incidents that also transpire on a daily basis that were not given light.
Even if restrictions are slightly lifted, incidents such as what Ms. Alday experienced would never cease because of the personal beliefs that influence how personnels enforce policies. Which is why it is important for the university to reaffirm its commitment to inclusivity by ensuring that all university personnel understand and follow one objective interpretation of the rules and regulations that they are enforcing.
The interpretation and implementation of the Student Handbook did not specifically stipulate the provisions regarding the undergarments of students, nor did it stipulate any corresponding course of actions such as the removal of such in public spaces for any dress code violation. It is important to note that even if the personnel was just basing their action with how they interpreted the policy, the mere thought of asking a student to remove their undergarments, man or woman, in a public space goes against any moral values that a person should have.
Nevertheless, the Council understands and respects the personal opinions of each individual in our community, we value their respective beliefs about certain topics. However, we condone actions that stem from these certain beliefs which degrade another human being. The CASSC heavily frowns upon such actions of moral turpitude that causes emotional and psychological harm to people.
Together with the student body, we are hoping and putting our trust for the university to ensure the full transparency of the investigation and action regarding this matter so that no student shall ever be terrified of being stripped of their dignity inside the university. May the university administration also invest their full effort in protecting student’s rights and welfare by systematically enforcing proper training and orientation about the policies and gender inclusive initiatives of the university. So as to also ensure that no student shall experience any kind of inconsistencies in the implementation of the university’s policies.
With that, the CASSC urges the University Student Council and the Student Regent to, once again, echo the call of the student body and lobby for the revision of the University Hand Book. It is high time to revise policies that restraints the total freedom of the Red Spartans. As the highest governing student council, your help will be beneficial in influencing the university to become even more progressive and inclusive not just by words but by actions as well. It is no longer new to hear the cries of the majority, and what we are hoping for is for these cries to actually be manifested to the administration and have a subsequent response that benefits the whole red and white community in the long run. Through the aid of the USC, we believe that the red and white community will be able to achieve this, and finally solve a long-standing obstacle within the university.
Advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights is not secondary, it is fundamental to the mission of the CAS Student Council. Afterall, dignity should also be at the heart of every Red Spartan’s service. Dignity for every individual, regardless of their perceptions and gender identity.
We no longer live in the past wherein the belief that gender is strictly black and white. It has become a faded tradition that no longer holds light in this modern era. Light that is composed of colorful rays meant to be for our LGBTQIA+ community.
