The spotlight shone brighter than ever on the national stage as the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) once again affirmed its excellence—not only in academics, but also in culture, leadership, and the arts. Rising to the pinnacle of this year’s 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 (𝗡𝗖𝗔𝗙) is 𝑴𝒓. 𝑹𝒉𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑱𝒖𝒅𝒆 𝑩. 𝑨𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈, a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student from the College of Health Sciences (CHS), who claimed the crown as 𝗠𝗿. 𝗣𝗔𝗦𝗨𝗖-𝗡𝗖𝗔𝗙 in a powerful and inspiring comeback.

Ansing’s journey is one that resonates deeply—not because it was easy, but because it was earned. Having previously competed in the same prestigious event, he faced the challenge of coming back stronger, carrying with him lessons, discipline, and an even deeper drive to succeed. 𝗨𝗦𝗠 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝘀 𝗠𝗿. 𝗣𝗔𝗦𝗨𝗖 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻

In a night defined by excellence and national pride, Rhever Jude Ansing of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) emerged victorious, clinching the Mr. PASUC 2026 title on April 10 at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center.

Ansing, a fourth-year Nursing student, stood out among 15 other contenders from across the country in one of the most anticipated events of the 12th Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) National Culture and the Arts Festival.

Demonstrating confidence, composure, and strong stage presence, he delivered a remarkable performance throughout the competition under the guidance of his mentors, Norabin O. Molina and Ruben L. Tagare.

The event gathers 16 pairs of candidates representing state universities and colleges nationwide, showcasing not only physical presence but also character and cultural representation.

The University of Southern Mindanao has long stood as a visionary in agricultural and educational advancements. However, with the vast changes in the global landscape, it expanded its vision by establishing the College of Health Sciences (CHS)—serving as a frontier of the health sector and addressing its growing demands.

What began as a humble school clinic was transformed in 1980 by Jaman S. Imlan into a 50-bed hospital, establishing the foundation of a new era. This expansion later enabled Kundo E. Pahm to introduce the School of Midwifery in 1991.

With the surging demand for healthcare professionals, the university strengthened its commitment to health sciences in late 2003 by establishing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the collaborative efforts of then College of Arts and Sciences Dean Anita B. Tacardon, University President Virgilio G. Oliva, Vice President for Finance and Administration Dr. Palasig U. Ampang, the University Hospital staff, and the Board of Regents (BOR).

In 2004, with nearly 400 students, the program quickly expanded beyond its role as a department in the College of Arts and Sciences, budding a new chapter in its journey. By 2007, under the leadership of Geraldine J. Arendain, the department gained independence and became a full-fledged College committed to becoming a regional center of excellence in nursing education.

In 2011, the BOR officially renamed the former College of Nursing to the College of Health Sciences, reflecting its multidisciplinary direction under OIC Dean Emmalyn M. Mamaluba, and in the same year introduced the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in close collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences.

Today, the College of Health Sciences, on its 22nd founding anniversary, continues to serve its purpose in addressing the health demands of the country. With the leadership of CHS' dean Professor Carlo Dela Cruz, the institution’s excellence is reflected in its graduates—not only as frontliners, but also in cementing the university’s globally competitive standing.
