𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 | 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭

The intersection of statistics and tourism took center stage as Samahang Statistika, in collaboration with the C.H.E. Association of Tourism Leaders and Service Providers (ATLAS), convened students and resource speakers for the StatExchange Symposium on October 27, 2026, at the Benguet State University Gymnasium.

In line with the 37th National Statistics Month and its theme, “Tuklas Pilipinas: Statistics as Beacon Towards Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Tourism,” the symposium featured discussions led by Mylene P. Tauli, Senior Tourism Operations Officer of the Department of Tourism–CAR, and Juliana A. Ragudo, OIC of the Statistics, Standards, and Regulation Section of the Baguio City Tourism, Culture and Arts Office.

The sessions explored the role of statistical information in tourism operations and development, followed by an open forum where attendees had the opportunity to raise questions and engage with the speakers. The exchange also provided a point of connection between the two fields, particularly in understanding how data can inform tourism planning and decision-making.

The symposium additionally brought attention to a connection that is sometimes overlooked: tourism development also depends on how well we understand and use data. As Statistics and Tourism continue to intersect in planning, research, and decision-making, collaborations such as this provide room for both disciplines to learn from one another and consider how their respective fields can contribute to more informed tourism practices.

𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 | 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬

Carried last October 24, 2026, during the Samahang Statistika Acquaintance Party, the second Drawing of Cards welcomed the new first-year members into their respective houses: Heart, Diamond, Club, and Spade. Each member drew a card from the shuffled deck, determining the house they would belong to.

More than an assignment, the four-house system was established to strengthen connections across year levels and provide a structure for peer mentoring and academic support. Through tutorial sessions and shared learning experiences, senior members are encouraged to guide their juniors, particularly in challenging subjects. Rather than creating divisions, the houses aim to build closer ties within the organization under one shared identity: Four Houses, One Home.

The card-drawing tradition also carries significance for graduating members, whose previously drawn cards will be transformed into dog tags for the upcoming pinning ceremony, a symbolic part of their journey as aspiring statisticians.

𝐀𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲

The Samahang Statistika Acquaintance Party gathered Statistics students across year levels for a day of introductions, games, performances, and socialization last October 24, 2026. The program opened with remarks from SS Co-adviser Sir Alvin Palsiyeng, followed by year level introductions and a lineup of games and intermission numbers.

Held under this year’s theme, “Retro Stats: Graphing Our Story,” the gathering gave members a chance to connect beyond their usual year-level circles and get to know one another outside the classroom. Each cohort had its own moment on stage, showing the personalities and talents that make up Samahang Statistika. The program concluded with closing remarks from SS Adviser Ma’am Precious Valentin, bringing the afternoon's activities to a close.

Here’s to hoping everyone enjoyed the day together.

𝐉𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 | 𝟑𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐒𝐌

Conducted during the opening program of the 37th National Statistics Month on October 19, 2026, the Jingle Competition brought together participants from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th-years of BS Statistics, alongside representatives from the College of Information Sciences.

Through their entries, participants presented their interpretations of the competition's theme through music, adding a creative component to this year's NSM activities.

We thank all participants for the time and effort they put into preparing and presenting their entries. The top placers will be announced during the closing ceremony (Oct 29) of this year's NSM, so stay tuned for the results!

𝐀 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢

Organized on October 23, 2026, at Solibao Hall, the A Day with Stat Alumni event brought together Statistics students and professionals for discussions on career experiences, research, and the practical applications of statistical knowledge across different fields.

The program featured talks covering operations management and applied research, including risk factor analysis among hemodialysis patients in Baguio-Benguet, predictors of survival time among breast cancer patients in Baguio, and trends and hotspot analysis of influenza-like illnesses in Baguio City and La Trinidad. Open forum sessions also gave attendees the opportunity to raise questions and engage with the speakers on their respective areas of work.

Samahang Statistika extends its appreciation to the speakers, organizers, and attendees who made the event possible. Thank you for sharing your experiences and contributing to the discussions, giving students a wider perspective on the opportunities and responsibilities that come with the field of Statistics.

Tourism involves more than destinations and visitor numbers. Understanding travel patterns, assessing local needs, and planning for sustainable growth also require reliable data and sound statistical insight.

In line with the 37th National Statistics Month and this year’s theme, “Tuklas Pilipinas: Statistics as a Beacon Towards Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Tourism,” Samahang Statistika, in collaboration with the CHE - Association of Tourism Leaders and Service Providers, presents StatExchange Symposium. The activity brings together perspectives from statistics and tourism to explore how data can inform tourism planning, service delivery, and sustainable development.

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

On October 22, 2026, Benguet State University hosted KomuniAksyon 2026, held in partnership with the Philippine Statistics Authority, the Department of Tourism, and the Community-Based Monitoring System. Carrying the theme “Statistics as Building Blocks for a Better Future,” the event put the spotlight on how reliable data can help communities understand their own needs and chart their own progress.

Participants learned about the CBMS and the PSA’s TUKLAS and CBMS Portal, along with real examples of how local government units and partner agencies put data to work, including a vegetable supply monitoring initiative that helps forecast market supply. The message was clear: good decisions start with good information.

Statistics doesn’t stay in the classroom. It shows up in barangay planning, in local budgets, and in the decisions that shape everyday life. For us in statistics, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do, and where our skills can take us beyond the classroom.

𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐠-𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲

The College of Numeracy and Applied Sciences (CNAS) led BSU's flag-raising ceremony last Monday, October 19, 2026, kicking off the 37th National Statistics Month.

The program featured a message from Imelda L. Buyuccan of the PSA–Benguet Provincial Statistical Office, who shared how this year’s theme reminds us to look beyond visitor counts and arrival records when measuring tourism. It was followed by an intermission number from our second-year BS Statistics students and a question-and-answer game facilitated by CNAS faculty, before CNAS Dean Ederson G. Bawang invited everyone to join the activities lined up for the month.

The celebration then continued at CASan Quadrangle with student exhibits and other activities lined up for the month.
