Congratulations to Biostats Professor, and past-Chair, Karen Bandeen-Roche, who has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Ernest Lyman Stebbins Medal—the highest honor bestowed by the Bloomberg School to a faculty member who has made extraordinary contributions to the School’s teaching programs over a period of at least five years. 🎉🎉🎉

Last Tuesday, our Department hosted our annual Spring Forum where we celebrated our soon-to-be graduating students, as well as our faculty and students accomplishments this past year. 🎉 Thank you to everyone for attending and participating; it is always a joy to gather and connect as a community!

Additionally, we presented Department awards to: Anik Burman, who received the June B. Culley Award (for best preliminary oral exam paper); Zheng Ren, who received the Jane and Steve Dykacz Award (honoring best student paper in medical statistics); and John Muschelli, who received the Joint High Performance Computing Exchange BIT Award. 👏

Congratulations to Daniel Obeng and Stephanie Hicks who each received an inaugural teaching award given by the Bloomberg School's Office of Academic Affairs and the BSPH Teaching Council! 👏👏🎉

Daniel received the "Innovation in Teaching Award" which recognizes faculty who have demonstrated excellence in teaching through the implementation of evidence-based, high-impact, and/or experimental instructional approaches that meaningfully enhance student learning.

Biostats Chair Elizabeth Stuart recently received $1 million in funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to lead a project to address real-world treatment decision challenges facing patients and clinicians.

Stuart will develop statistical methods and data visualization tools, using large-scale health data, to identify the most effective treatments across a variety of conditions.

One will assess support programs for dementia caregivers; the other will develop statistical methods that use large-scale healthcare data.
