SPPS made a strong showing at this year's American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Annual Meeting! 🥼

Held Oct. 17-20 in Salt Lake City, the conference brought together clinical pharmacy leaders from across the country to share research, advance clinical practice and discuss policy issues facing the profession.

From research presentations and scientific posters to educational sessions and networking events, SPPS contributed to important conversations shaping the future of clinical pharmacy.

Transforming drug development, one protein map at a time. 🗺️

Jun Qu, PhD, professor of pharmaceutical sciences, and his research team, have developed a novel technology that generates thousands of detailed “satellite maps” showing where individual proteins are distributed across tissue in the body. 🔬

By mapping drugs alongside these proteins, researchers can see where treatments reach tissue and how those regions respond. The technology could help uncover new therapeutic targets and guide the development of safer, more effective medicines, with promising applications for diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

“Our ambition is to help researchers discover better targets and develop treatments that make a greater difference for patients," says Qu. "It's definitely promising for diseases such as Alzheimer's that have proven hard to treat.”

Please join us in congratulating Kyle Shapcott, PharmD, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at SPPS, on receiving an Education and Training Practice and Research Network Teaching Enhancement Grant from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy - ACCP! 🎉

Awarded to support educational initiatives and research, scholarship of teaching and learning and professional development, the competitive grant funds two projects annually to a member of the network. Shapcott received the grant for his project, "AI-Assisted Virtual Patient Integration in Experiential Pharmacy Education: A Feasibility and Preceptor Usability Mixed-Methods Study."

His research explores how AI-assisted virtual patient cases can be integrated into experiential pharmacy education to supplement clinical training, support the development of student clinical reasoning skills and help address challenges such as variability in patient exposure and preceptor time constraints. Grant funding will support platform enhancements, improved accessibility through a dedicated website and recruitment of preceptors for the upcoming study in experiential pharmacy settings. 🥼

Congratulations to Kelly Sze, PharmD '28, one of 21 student pharmacists nationwide to receive the 2026 CVS Health Foundation/American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy - AACP Community Pharmacy Award! 🎉

Funded by the CVS Health Foundation, the award supports PharmD students who demonstrate a commitment to improving the health and well-being of patients, advancing the pharmacy profession and serving their communities. Recipients receive a $20,000 scholarship to support their pharmacy education. 🥼

“Receiving the 2026 CVS Health Foundation/AACP Community Pharmacy Award is an incredible honor and a meaningful recognition of the hard work, dedication and perseverance I have put into my pharmacy journey," said Sze. "This scholarship reassures me that my efforts are making a difference and motivates me to continue working toward my academic and professional goals."

Our final feature highlights our PharmD students who are helping reduce hypertension risk in our local community. This spring, students hosted a public outreach event at Neighborhood Health Center Mattina in Buffalo, where they provided blood pressure screenings, shared healthy lifestyle strategies and educated community members on hypertension risk reduction.

Through initiatives like this, student pharmacists are expanding access to care and bringing preventive health education and resources directly to the communities that need them most. 💙

Continuing our celebration of National , we're spotlighting our SPPS pharmacy professionals and learners and the impact they're making through patient care, research, education and service. 🥼

Our next feature highlights a team of researchers from the Department of Pharmacy Practice working to advance equity in diabetes care. Their research examined disparities in the use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) among underserved populations, particularly immigrants and refugees.

The team identified challenges such as limited health and digital literacy, financial hardship and language barriers that can prevent these individuals from fully benefiting from CGM technology. Their findings also outlined practical strategies pharmacists can use to help patients overcome these challenges and better manage their diabetes.

Their work highlights the important role pharmacists play in improving access to care and supporting better health outcomes for underserved populations. 💙

Dr. Muzykantov is the Founders Professor of Nanoparticle Research, Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine, Vice-Chair, Department of Pharmacology, Founding Director, Center for Targeted Therapeutics & Translational Nanomedicine (CT3N), Translational Research Center, Lead, Targeting Theme and Core, PENN Institute for RNA Innovation, University of Pennsylvania, The Perelman School of Medicine.

Dr. Muzykantov will present, 'Targeting Nanomedicine to the Lungs, Brain and Heart.'

As part of National , we're continuing to spotlight our SPPS pharmacy professionals and learners and the impact they're making through patient care, research, education and service. 🥼

Our next feature highlights a team of researchers from UB and the Department of Pharmacy Practice who are helping advance the future of HIV treatment. Using artificial intelligence, the team helped develop more precise dosing strategies for promising new HIV-fighting antibodies based on an individual's specific characteristics.

Their findings could help pave the way for long-acting HIV therapies that may require only one or two doses per year for some individuals, making treatment more convenient while improving disease management and patient outcomes.

Their research highlights the critical role pharmacists play in advancing innovative therapies from discovery to patient care. 💙

Our next feature highlights our PharmD students who are making a difference abroad through our Global Health Initiatives Program. Earlier this year, a group of PharmD students and faculty joined the UB School of Nursing for a clinical immersion in Belize.

Working as part of an interprofessional team, PharmD students conducted community health assessments, provided care through local clinics and learned about Belize's healthcare system from local health professionals. The trip gave them firsthand exposure to patient care in underserved communities and broadened their understanding of global health.

This experience highlights the important role pharmacists play in improving health outcomes, fostering interprofessional collaboration and serving diverse communities around the world. 🌎
