Twenty years ago — Sept. 19, 2006 — UB orchestrated what could arguably be one of its proudest and most unifying days in its history. UB hosted His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who was and is still one of the most recognized and celebrated people in the world.

Last month, UB’s Office of International Education welcomed 11 students and two faculty members from Kanazawa University as part of a special short-term summer program for undergraduate students interested in international cooperation, urban planning, and medicine.

Kanazawa and Buffalo have been sister cities for many years, and UB and Kanazawa University have had an exchange agreement for more than 50 years.

An update from our alumna, Sophie McGuire (BA 2022):

After graduating, I first spent time working as an intern at Cortland Repertory Theatre in their costumes department and soon after moving to Japan for 6 months to attend Waseda University's Center for Japanese Language. During my time at Waseda, not only did I attend weekly classes but I got the opportunity to be the costume designer for a local theatre production called 兎王 (Tou).

4 years post graduation, I have returned to Japan where I am studying at a Japanese Language school to improve my Japanese skills while searching for theatre opportunities and connections. Through hard work and taking one step at a time, I hope to one day reach my goal of working full time in the theatre industry in Japan.
